FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Kenyon College baseball team used clutch hitting in extra innings of game one and a strong pitching performance in game two to sweep a Thursday doubleheader from the Westminster College Titans. The Lords outlasted the Titans, 9-6, in an 11-inning game one and then followed up with a 3-0 victory in game two.
The heart of Kenyon's batting order, which had a bit of a new look to it, powered the Lords through the game-one win.
Mikey Arman and
Matt von Roemer, batting in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively, both went 3-for-6 and combined for four RBI and three runs scored.
Phillip Nam, batting in the No. 5 spot, added a 2-for-6 performance with two runs scored and an RBI.
With the score tied 6-6 in the 11th inning, those same batsmen pulled through for Kenyon. Once
Jackson Celestin got aboard and was sacrificed to second, Arman got things going with a one-out single to left center that scored Celestin. Arman then stole second and came around to score on a base hit from von Roemer. Two batters later, Nam singled home von Roemer and gave the Lords a three-run cushion.
Kenyon starting pitcher
Paul Henshaw did not have his best stuff, but the Lords' bullpen more than made up for it.
Connor Farrell came on in the seventh inning and pitched three frames, allowing just one hit and striking out three.
Spencer Byers took over tenth-inning duties and struck out two, but also allowed an unearned run that knotted things up a 6-6. In the 11th, sophomore
Luke Calcei took the hill and needed only 11 pitches to earn his first collegiate save. The four Kenyon pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts.
Early in game one, Kenyon took advantage of several Westminster errors to score three unearned runs in the first inning. In the second inning, Arman and von Roemer came up with RBI hits to stake the Lords to a 5-1 lead.
In game two, senior starter
Sam Gillespie stole the spotlight. He pitched all seven innings, allowed just two hits and struck out eight. He gave up no free passes and only one Westminster runner managed to reach third base. Gillespie only got stronger as the game progressed. He retired the last ten batters he faced and improved his season record to 2-0 with a 2.19 earned run average and 14 strikeouts in a little over 12 innings of work.
Run support in game two once again came early for Kenyon. In the bottom of the first inning,
Matt Contreras was brought around to score on a von Roemer single through the right side. Arman, who reached base earlier via walk, scored the team's second run after Nam drew a bases-loaded walk. In the fifth, Kenyon posted its final run of the day. Contreras led off with a single. Three batters later he touched the plate after running on a fielder's choice struck by
Andrew Petersdorf.
For the day, von Roemer was 4-for-8 with a run scored and three RBI. Arman was 3-for-6 with three runs scored and Chafe was 3-for-8 with an RBI.
The Lords return to the diamond tomorrow with a 4 p.m. doubleheader against Penn State-Behrend.
Senior Sam Gillespie threw a seven-inning, two-hit gem in the second game of the Lords' doubleheader sweep on Thursday.
Gillespie didn't walk a batter and he struck out eight to steer the Lords to a 3-0 win over Westminster.
