Lords and Lions play to doubleheader split

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Kenyon College and Penn State Behrend split a baseball doubleheader on Friday evening at Lawnwood Complex. In the opener, a late error helped propel the Lords to a slim 3-2 win before the Lions claimed a 9-6 victory in the second contest.

GAME ONE

Offense was hard to come by for both teams during the opener. After three innings of play, just three hits had been recorded and there were just a half-dozen players able to get on base.

The scoreless tie came to an end though in the fourth frame by the Lions. After Scott Sada singled and stole second base, Zach Murray sent a shot to center field allowing his teammate to round home.

Two innings later, Kenyon found a pair of runs to take its first lead of the affair. In the fourth at-bat of the inning, Jono Chafe singled through the left side plating Matt von Roemer who led off the inning with a hit. A few batters later with the bases loaded, Jason Clebowicz got hit by a pitch allowing Phillip Nam to score.

Needing a run in the seventh to keep the game going, Behrend got one as John Hlavinka sent a shot to left field scoring a Lions base-runner from second.

With the score knotted up at two apiece in the eighth, the Lords got a break in the form of an infield error. Nam led off the frame reaching first after an error by Behrend's first baseman. After being moved over to second base by Chafe, Nam made it to third after a wild pitch. In the next at-bat, Tyler Roldan drove in Nam with an RBI groundout.

The Lions got runners on the corners in the bottom of the eighth, but Connor Farrell induced a flyout to right field to end the game.

Farrell earned his first win of the year as he pitched the final three innings, struck out three and allowed just a run. Jesse Bogacz fared well tossing the first five innings while fanning six. Offensively, the Lords were led by von Roemer and Jackson Celestin who each tallied two hits.

GAME TWO

Penn State Behrend was down 6-5 heading into the final two innings but they outscored the Lords 4-0 in the sixth and seventh frames to earn a 9-6 win.

Down 2-1 heading to the third, Kenyon retook the lead as three straight hits capped off by a Nam two-run single put the Lords back up 3-2.

Kenyon extended its lead to 5-2 in the next inning as an error from the Lions' second baseman allowed Alec Manning to score. Andrew Petersdorf added an RBI single in the inning as well.
The bats from the Lions finally began to wake up starting in the fifth when they put up three runs on the scoreboard and tied the game at 5.

Behrend started its comeback as Brian Bohman tripled to left center scoring Brandon Bergstrom who had doubled to lead off the inning. David Boehme followed with a run-scoring double and the three-run inning was capped off by Ian Taylor's RBI single.

Kenyon went back up 6-5 in the home half of the fifth as Clebowicz drove in Chafe on a fielder's choice. But that was the last time the Lords held the lead.

In the final two innings, Behrend got a two-run double down the left field line from Boehme and they capped off its scoring in the seventh as two runs crossed on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch and walk. For Kenyon, just two runners made it into scoring position in the final two frames.

Mikey Arman, Chafe and Petersdorf led the Lords in the batter's box with two hits each.

Next up for the Lords is a doubleheader against Geneva College (PA) March 14 starting at 10 a.m.
