FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Starting the second week of its two-week spring break schedule, the Kenyon College baseball team swept a Monday doubleheader from the Geneva College Golden Tornadoes. The Lords needed an extra inning in game one to pull out a 5-4 win and then used a superb pitching performance from senior
Sam Gillespie to take game two, 3-2.
Gillespie was brilliant in game two, tossing six shutout innings and striking out 13. He gave up just three hits and walked two. Between the fourth and fifth innings, he struck out six straight. Gillespie earned the win for his efforts and now sports early-season numbers that include a perfect 3-0 record with a 1.47 earned run average and 27 strikeouts in 18-and-one-third innings pitched.
Geneva (3-5) got to Kenyon reliever
Spencer Byers for two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but sophomore
Luke Calcei came on to close the door, getting the final two outs and picking up his second save of the season.
Kenyon (6-4) didn't produce a ton in the way of offense, but with Gillespie on the mound the team didn't need much.
Matt von Roemer got on board via an error in the first inning and came around to score after
Andrew Petersdorf doubled to deep center.
In the fourth inning,
Alec Manning walked, stole second and moved to third on an error. He then scored when
John Nahra got on base because of another Geneva error. Two more Geneva errors in the fifth inning allowed Petersdorf to score the Lords' third and final run.
In game one, Kenyon played its fourth extra-inning contest of the season. The Lords trailed 4-2 going into the seventh inning, but strung together a few doubles to tie the game up and to carry things into the eighth inning.
Tyler Roldan kicked off the seventh-inning Kenyon rally with a double to center field. Nahra then doubled to left field to score Roldan.
Mikey Arman followed up with a single, but Nahra was thrown out at the plate trying to score the tying run. So, with two outs,
Jackson Celestin doubled to left to score Arman and tied the game at 4-4.
In the top of the eighth inning, freshman
Sam Lipscomb took the mound in relief for the Lords. He struck out the first batter he faced, yielded a single and then coaxed a 5-4-3 double play.
In the bottom of the eighth, Manning belted another double to centerfield.
Phillip Nam then stroked the game-winning hit up the middle to score Manning.
Lipscomb picked up the win for his one inning of work. Kenyon starter
Paul Henshaw worked into the seventh inning. Before being replaced, Henshaw allowed seven hits and a walk. He struck out five and gave up four runs, but only one was earned.
In the two games combined, Petersdorf was 3-for-7 with three runs scored, while Celestin was 3-for-8 with two doubles. Nahra and Roldan both had two hits and two RBI for the Lords, who had 14 hits on the day.
Kenyon returns to action Tuesday with another 10:00 am doubleheader, this time against Albright College.
Senior Sam Gillespie struck out 13 batters in six innings of work. He allowed just three hits and
no runs as the Lords completed the doubleheader sweep of Geneva College with a 3-2 game-two win.
