LANCASTER, Pa. – For three quarters, the Kenyon College Lords lacrosse team played an even game with the host Franklin and Marshall College Diplomats. One quarter, however, was all it took for the game to be decided, as Franklin and Marshall outscored Kenyon 6-0 in the third and forged ahead for a 16-9 non-conference win Saturday.
Kenyon (3-1) trailed 3-2 after one quarter of play, but gained a 4-3 advantage in the second quarter to knot the score 6-6 at halftime. Kenyon's first-half play was powered by its man-up unit, which was a perfect 3-for-3 in the first half and 4-for-6 for the game.
All three first-half, man-up goals for the Lords came from the stick of junior
Robert Jacobs, who netted one in the first and two in the second. Roberts also assisted on a first-quarter goal from
Josh Galardi. The Lords' other first-half goals came from
Chris Ferraro and
Alex Lopez.
Kenyon's downfall came in the third quarter. Franklin and Marshall won 6-of-7 face-offs and rang up six goals in the quarter. The Diplomats also scored the last goal of the second quarter and the first goal of the fourth quarter, giving them eight straight scores before a Kenyon answer.
Galardi ended the Kenyon drought, which lasted nearly 25 minutes, by scoring his second goal of the game at the 10:31 mark of the fourth quarter.
Jonah Florence added another Kenyon goal and Galardi scored one more time to make it 14-9 with 6:38 remaining in the game.
With one exception, team statistics were pretty even across the board. Franklin and Marshall took 46 shots, Kenyon took 40. Kenyon keeper
Patrick Shevelson had 16 saves, Franklin and Marshall's Thomas Moore made 15 saves. Groundballs, turnovers and clears were all about the same, too. The one stat that stood out, however, was face-offs. The Diplomats dominated that department by winning 20 of the 29 face-offs contested. Mike Sanzone was responsible for all 20 of those wins. The bright spot for Kenyon was freshman
Will Swain, who was tested late and won 6-of-11 face-offs.
Mike Rama and Sean Rodgers each recorded a game-high four goals for Franklin and Marshall (4-2), while Jacobs and Galardi led Kenyon with three apiece. Jacobs also had two assists and Florence finished with a goal and two assists.
Robert Jacobs scored three man-up goals Saturday, but that wasn't enough to stop the Lords
from absorbing their first loss of the season, a 16-9 defeat at Franklin and Marshall College.
