FORT PIERCE, Fla. – Kenyon College bats erupted for 15 hits in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader. The season-high hit total resulted in a 14-7 win for the Lords, who earned a split with the Albright College Lions after dropping game one by a 4-2 final score.
In the first inning of game two, Kenyon sent ten batters to the plate. The Lords rang up five hits and scored four runs. Philip Nam had the big hit with a one-out, two-run triple to the right field wall.
Alec Manning and
Cormac Jewell followed with run-scoring plays on an error and a single, respectively.
That four-run cushion gave Kenyon starting pitcher
Connor Farrell some room with which to work. He struggled a bit in the second inning, giving up three runs, but settled down from there and picked up the win after throwing five innings, giving up eight hits and two earned runs. He also struck out four and didn't walk a batter.
The Lords' offense gave Farrell some extra support in the third and fourth innings. In the third,
Tyler Roldan reached base via fielder's choice and Jewell singled. Roldan went to third on the single and Jewell moved to second on Albright's attempt to put out Roldan at third.
Max Warren then singled up the middle to score both runners, giving Kenyon a 6-3 lead after three innings of play.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Lords got four straight hits, including a lead-off triple from
Matt Contreras.
Jackson Celestin plated Contreras with a single and later in the inning, Nam ripped a two-run single to left field, pushing Kenyon's lead to 9-3.
Albright made things a little more interesting with a run in the fifth and three more in the sixth, but Kenyon reliever
Luke Calcei worked out of the jam and kept his Kenyon team in front.
The Lords' offense then cranked out five more runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away. Overall, Celestin finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Jewell, Contreras and Warren were all 2-for-3, while Nam and Manning were 2-for-4. Nam had four RBI and Manning had three. Contreras, batting out of the leadoff spot, scored three times.
In game one, Kenyon managed to put together nine hits, but only created two runs. In the fourth inning, Nam doubled down the left field line.
Jono Chafe then singled up the middle to score Nam, but Kenyon was down 4-1 at that point.
Prior to Kenyon scoring, Albright got to Kenyon starter
Nick Maryan for four runs. Maryan struck out the first two batters he faced, but the Lions battled back, taking a hit-by-pitch and following up with two doubles, the second of which scored two runs.
Single runs in the second and third innings gave Albright a 4-0 lead and chased Maryan from the game. Maryan gave up five hits and struck out four. Three of the four runs he yielded were earned.
Kenyon's other run was posted in the fifth inning. Senior
John Nahra led off with a triple to right center. Contreras then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Nahra.
Batting out of the nine-hole, Nahra was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Roldan was also 2-for-3 in game one. Kenyon's five other hits came from five different batters, including the first three in the lineup.
The split with the Lions moved Kenyon's record to 7-5. The Lords have Wednesday off and will next face Earlham College in a single nine-inning game scheduled for Thursday at 10:00 a.m.
During the Lords' doubleheader split Tuesday with the Albright College Lions,
Phillip Nam went a combined 3-for-7 with three runs scored and four RBI.
