FORT MYERS, Fla. – Kenyon College (8-6) split a pair of games on Tuesday as it defeated Curry College 9-2 and fell to the University of Saint Joseph 4-2 at the Gene Cusic Classic at CenturyLink Sports Complex.
GAME ONE
Freshman
Mari Colucci drove in a team-high four runs as the Ladies jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before pulling away against the Colonels during the first game of the day.
After
Molly O'Connor's RBI double, Colucci followed with a two-run single in the next at-bat to provide Kenyon all the run support it needed in the contest.
Curry was able to cut into the deficit in the second as Jessica Saluti tallied a run-scoring double.
Each team tallied a run in the third inning before the Ladies erupted with five runs in the fifth frame. Colucci started the scoring smacking a two-run double plating
Emma Olson and
Amanda Ogata.
Jane Ghublikian also drove in two with a two-out single. Kenyon's final run of the inning came on a passed ball.
In the circle,
Austen Whibley earned her fifth with of the season as she tossed five innings, allowed five hits and fanned six.
Sylvie Thomas came in for relief in the final two frames and only allowed a hit while striking out four.
Offensively, four different players recorded two hits: Colucci, Ghublikian, O'Connor and Ogata.
GAME TWO
The Ladies struggled to get anything going as Saint Joseph pitcher Patti Sciglimpaglia fanned 11 batters and gave up just five hits to Kenyon.
The Blue Jays got on the board first as a wild pitch with two outs allowed Isabella Russo to score from third.
Kenyon had a good opportunity in the second to get on the scoreboard with the bases loaded and just an out. But a fielder's choice turned into an out at home plate and the final out came on a grounder to Saint Joseph's second baseman.
Saint Joseph increased its lead to 2-0 in the third frame when Sciglimpaglia hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Russo.
Scoring was capped off for the Blue Jays squad in the bottom of the fifth. Sciglimpaglia had an RBI double and three batters later, Rachel Dube drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs.
The scoreless drought ended for the Ladies in the sixth. After
Lindsey Susolik reached on an error, Ogata singled putting a pair of runners on base. In the next plate appearance, Colucci singled to center field scoring two.
Hoping for a hot finish, the Ladies didn't get it as Sciglimpaglia allowed just one runner to get on base in the seventh before securing three outs to end the game.
Kenyon will close its spring break trip tomorrow when they play Nichols College and University of Wisconsin-Superior starting at 9 a.m.
