GAMBIER, Ohio – Capitalizing on a couple of extra-man opportunities early in Wednesday's men's lacrosse game put the Kenyon College Lords on the path to a 16-7 non-conference win over the Otterbein University Cardinals.
Otterbein (3-4) earned a slashing penalty 78 seconds into the game and then was called for another slash about seven minutes later. The Lords used the extra-man situations to take a 1-0 lead on a goal from
Jonah Florence and then a 2-1 lead after
Emilio Sosa fired one home.
From that point, Kenyon never gave up the lead. The Lords (6-1) scored seven of the game's next eight goals and coasted into halftime with a 9-3 lead. Sophomore
Chris Ferraro scored three goals during the Lords' first-half run, while classmate
Josh Galardi pumped in two.
For most of the game the Lords kept the Cardinals on their heels. Kenyon camped out in the Otterbein zone and unleashed a season-high 59 shots. Twenty-nine of those shots were on goal and Otterbein goalkeeper James Gundling tried to keep his team in the game by making 13 saves.
At the other end of the field, Otterbein struggled to crack the Kenyon defense. The Cardinals managed 27 shots, however, only 15 were on goal and Kenyon keeper
Patrick Shevelson went largely untested, notching a season-low eight saves.
Meanwhile, Ferraro and Galardi continued to pace the Kenyon attack. Ferraro finished with five goals and two assists, while Galardi finished with four goals. Junior
Alex Lopez added two goals and two assists.
Robert Jacobs,
Pierce Kraft and Florence each had one goal and one assist.
The Cardinals got five goals from Connor Dziewit, but they never got closer than six goals during the second half of play.
Freshman
Will Swain dominated in the face-off department, winning 19-of-26 for the Lords, who now prepare for a big conference contest against No. 11-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University. That game will be played in Delaware, Ohio, beginning at 1 p.m.
