Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Nationally-ranked OWU downs Kenyon, 14-7

DELAWARE, Ohio – Alex Lopez scored three goals and Jonah Florence dished out five assists, but the Kenyon College Lords lacrosse team could not keep pace with the No. 11-ranked Ohio Wesleyan University Battling Bishops on Saturday at Selby Stadium. The host Bishops built from an early 4-0 lead to eventually claim a 14-7 North Coast Athletic Conference win.

Kenyon (6-2, 1-1 NCAC) was looking for a solid start to the game, but instead got outscored 4-1 in the first quarter. Four different Ohio Wesleyan players notched the first goals of the game and the Bishops bolted out to a 4-0 lead with 2:17 remaining on the first-quarter clock.

The Lords tallied their first goal with just 33 seconds remaining in the quarter. Lopez did the honors off an assist from Florence. That goal came in a man-advantage situation for the Lords, who also scored their next two goals with a Bishop in the box. Lopez and Florence hooked up again at 11:01 of the second quarter and then Florence served one up to Emilio Sosa, whose goal at the 9:55 mark cut Kenyon's deficit to two.

Ohio Wesleyan (7-2, 2-0 NCAC) answered with another four-goal streak that gave the Bishops a 9-3 lead early in the third. Kenyon would pull within five goals once in the third quarter and again in the fourth, but the Lords could get no closer than that.

The Battling Bishops peppered the Kenyon goal with 58 shots, forcing Kenyon senior goalkeeper Patrick Shevelson to make 21 saves, a total that tied his career high. At the other end of the field, Kenyon managed 28 shots.

Kenyon won 14 of 24 face-offs, but the extra possessions were basically nullified by 19 turnovers. Ohio Wesleyan, meanwhile, had just four turnovers and was a perfect 18-of-18 on clears.

In addition to Lopez's three goals, Kenyon got single tallies from Josh Galardi, Robert Jacobs, Chris Ferraro and Sosa. The Lords were 4-of-8 in extra-man opportunities and held Ohio Wesleyan to a 2-of-5 showing.

The Battling Bishops got three goals from Max Tennant and two apiece from Marcus Dietz, Matt Maier, Luke Leyden and Cooper Del Zotto.

The Lords will look to bounce back next Saturday at home against Wabash College. That conference contest is slated for a 1 p.m. start at McBride Field.
