Game Recap: Baseball |

Lords, Yeomen divvy up a pair

The Kenyon College baseball team (17-8, 5-3 NCAC) hosted Oberlin College (11-12, 3-1 NCAC) in the first of two weekend doubleheaders at McCloskey field. Saturday's games came out even, as each team claimed a game apiece. Kenyon won game one 4-2 and looked to be in position to complete the sweep, but Oberlin mounted a comeback behind the strength of nine unanswered runs to win game two by a count of 11-9.

Game One
Oberlin started the scoring with back-to-back singles from their first two batters, Justin Cruz and Sam Harris, followed by a sacrifice fly from Isaac Dinsmore to take an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.

Kenyon rallied back in the bottom of the first with a three-run tally. After walks to Matt Contreras and Phillip Nam, Mikey Arman tied the game with an RBI single. After a third walk to Alec Manning, Tyler Roldan recorded a two-out, two-run single to give Kenyon a 3-1 lead.

After the high-scoring first inning, both pitchers settled down. Kenyon starter Paul Henshaw retired 14 straight batters spanning from the end of the first until the sixth inning. Oberlin starter Sean Kiley sent down ten consecutive batters before a single from Jason Clebowicz broke his streak in the bottom of the fifth.

Kenyon would push Clebowicz across later in the inning after another two-out, RBI single from Phillip Nam. Three of the four Kenyon runs were driven in via two-out hits.

In the sixth inning, the Yeomen were finally able to get base runners after Henshaw issued walks to Brendan Mapes and Cruz. Oberlin scored their second run on a fielder's choice from Dinsmore. Luke Calcei came on to pitch to the next batter, Brian Carney, who lined out to right field to end the threat.

Calcei completed his fourth save of the season in the seventh inning, striking out two. Henshaw (2-1) went 5.2 innings, allowed three hits, walked two batters, struck out four and allowed two earned runs to get the win. Sean Kiley (1-2) pitched his first complete game of the season in defeat, allowing five hits and four earned runs over six innings of work.

Game Two
The Lords found themselves in control for the better part of the game, jumping out to a 9-2 advantage after four innings of play. Oberlin started off the scoring with two runs in the top of the third, but then the Lords offense went to work.

In the third inning, Kenyon would send ten batters to the dish. Jackson Celestin started the rally with a base hit before Clebowicz reached on an error. Contreras singled home Celestin. Arman tied the game with an RBI groundout.

After the damage appeared to be over, Contreras gave Kenyon the lead on a wild pitch, Nam walked and Matt von Roemer doubled to score Nam. Two more errors in the inning would lead to two more runs for the Lords. The Yeomen helped the Lords with three errors and three wild pitches in total during the third frame.

Celestin would jump start another rally in the bottom of the fourth with a double. Clebowicz, John Nahra, Nam and Arman all singled in a three-run inning.

The seven-run edge would not hold, however, as Oberlin came fighting back. Dinsmore knocked an RBI single in the top of the fifth to bring Oberlin to within six. Kenyon starter Sam Gillepsie finished the sixth inning, putting himself in line for the victory after allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and four walks. He struck out three.

Over the next three innings, however, Oberlin would rally to take the lead.

Connor Farrell walked the only two batters he faced in the top of seventh. Ross Scheinberg would relieve him, but with singles by Dinsmore, Mapes, and Colin Brown, plus RBI fielder's choices from Blaise Dolcemaschio and Jeff Evans, the Yeomen pushed across four runs. The Lords were able to avert complete disaster after Spencer Byers recorded the final out with the bases loaded.

Oberlin came roaring back in eighth inning, picking up right where they left off with a Carney double and Dinsmore single. Mapes would drive in a run with a fielder's choice. After a passed ball, Dolcemaschio tied the game with an RBI single. Evans walked with the bases loaded to give Oberlin the lead after two infield singles.

Oberlin would add one more in the ninth after a Kenyon error.

Kenyon was not able to rally off Oberlin's closer, Milo Sklar, who recorded the final six outs for Oberlin with four strikeouts. Sklar picked up his second save on the year, Nicholas Morgan (1-0) earned his first victory after pitching a scoreless seventh inning, and Spencer Byers (1-1) was charged with the loss.
