Bogacz steers Lords to another doubleheader split

GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College sophomore starting pitcher Jesse Bogacz struck out a career-high 13 in game one of Sunday's doubleheader with the Oberlin College Yeomen. The Lords held on to win that game 2-1, but Oberlin evened things out with a 6-4 victory in the nightcap.

Bogacz had Oberlin guessing for seven strong innings. He allowed just five hits and three walks while surpassing his previous high of 11 strikeouts notched in a win over Earlham College earlier this year. Aside from his 13 strikeouts, Bogacz recorded seven fly-outs and two groundouts. One of his strikeout victims reached base via passed ball, so Bogacz needed to nail down what turned out to be one extra out in the seven-inning affair.

The stellar outing moved Bogacz's pitching record to 3-1 on the season and lowered his earned run average to 4.00.

While Bogacz was mowing down the Yeomen, the Lords offense plated the first run of the game in the second inning. Matt von Roemer led off with a double down the left field line. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Tyler Roldan ripped a single up the middle.

Oberlin matched that run, using a hit batsman, a wild pitch and an RBI single from Brendan Mapes in the top of the third.

Advancing to the bottom of the sixth in the 1-1 deadlock, the Lords got the winning run across the plate after Mikey Arman started the frame with a single to right field. He stole second and was then replaced by pinch runner John Nahra. When the next batter, von Roemer, rolled a grounder to second, Oberlin botched the throw to first and allowed Nahra to score what held up as the game-winning run.

Game two was a nine-inning contest and featured a bevy of pitchers. Kenyon burned through five arms, while Oberlin sent seven to the hill. Kenyon's first two pitchers, Kai Leisher and Matt Delbridge, both struggled a bit and allowed Oberlin to jump out to leads of 2-0 and 4-2.

After the Yeomen scored twice in the first inning off Leisher, Kenyon tied things up in the bottom of the second when Alec Manning stroked a 3-1 pitch over the left-centerfield wall for two-run homer.

Oberlin tacked on one more run in the top of the third, but an RBI double from Cormac Jewell in the bottom of the inning tied things up at 3-3.

The Yeomen added to their lead by getting to Kenyon reliever Spencer Byers for two more runs. They picked up a sacrifice fly in the fifth and then an unearned run in the seventh to move ahead 6-3.

Kenyon also scored an unearned run in the seventh, but that would do it for the Lords, who left two runners on base in both the eighth and ninth innings. Oberlin closer Milo Sklar registered the final five outs to collect his second save of the series and his third of the season.

Overall, von Roemer was a combined 2-for-6 with three runs scored in the doubleheader. Roldan, Arman and Matt Contreras all had two hits, as well.

The split puts Kenyon's records at 18-9 overall and 6-4 in the East Division of the North Coast Athletic Conference. Oberlin moved to 12-13 overall and 4-2 in the East Division.
