Game Recap: Baseball |

Lords split with Tigers on Senior Day

The Kenyon College baseball team split a pair of games with the Wittenberg University Tigers on Saturday afternoon as the Lords celebrated the careers of their five seniors on Senior Day. The Lords were able to get by the Tigers in game one with a 5-2 victory, but fell in game two by a count of 4-3.

Game One

Senior Paul Henshaw had a memorable performance going the distance in a 5-2 win. Henshaw (3-1) threw seven innings for his second complete game of the season, allowing just five hits, two earned runs, one walk and one strikeout. The Tigers were forced into groundouts for 14 of their 21 outs in the contest.

Kenyon led the game wire-to-wire, pushing across runs in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings. In the fifth inning, Wittenberg battled back from a 3-1 deficit to tighten the game up at 3-2. Kenyon followed in the home half of that inning with insurance runs as Matt Contreras and John Nahra recorded an RBI single and run-scoring triple, respectively.

Mikey Arman, Kenyon's three-hole hitter, went 4-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI. Alec Manning singled twice with a run scored, providing additional run support for Henshaw. Overall, the Lords had 13 hits and were walked four times by the Tigers.

The loss was charged to Wittenberg's starter Jace Barga (0-3), who surrendered three runs (two earned) off eight hits, three walks, with two strikeouts.

Game Two

The Lords turned to another senior in game two, but Sam Gillespie was unable to hold the lead in the fifth inning, allowing the Tigers to push across the two runs that would eventually give them a 4-3 win.

Gillespie (6-2) allowed three earned runs in 4.1 innings pitched off six hits, while walking two and striking out none to pick up just his second loss of the season.

Wittenberg started off the scoring on a Jason Kaplan RBI single in the top of the second inning. The Tigers added another run on Barga's RBI double in the top of the fourth to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage. However, the lead would not last for long.

In the bottom of the fourth, Kenyon's offense woke up. After loading up the bases with one out, Cormac Jewell started the scoring with an RBI fielder's choice. The next batter, Jono Chafe, lined a ball into right field that was misplayed by Barga. The result was a two-RBI triple, but Chafe was thrown out trying to stretch the play into an inside-the-park home run. Kenyon left the inning with a 3-2 lead.

Again, the lead would not last. In the top of fifth, Wittenberg scored two via a wild pitch and an RBI-single by Timmy Bates to reclaim a 4-3 lead.

The Tigers turned the lead over to their bullpen as Jonathon Forster picked up the final nine outs to preserve the victory. Forster (2-3) allowed just two hits while striking out three and walking none to earn the win.

The same two teams will tomorrow for a doubleheader in Springfield, Ohio starting at noon.
