GAMBIER, Ohio – The Ladies softball team took on Oberlin College on Saturday in a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Kenyon Softball Complex. Kenyon rolled to a 13-5 win in game one before NCAA rules came into play during the second contest. Oberlin had tied the game at 18 in the sixth, but the umpires called the game in the home half of that inning due to rain. Per NCAA rules, the entire sixth frame was erased bringing the final tally to 18-15, Ladies.
GAME ONE
The Yeowomen, coached by former Kenyon assistant and standout player Sara Schoenhoft, jumped out to a 2-1 lead as the visitors tallied a pair of runs in the second and third innings. Oberlin got on the board with a bases-loaded walk and Izzy Gonzalez-Velarde smacked a homer to right center.
Kenyon then flexed its offensive muscle in the home half of the third.
It started as
Molly O'Connor's double to left-center field plated
Lindsey Susolik and helped the Ladies tie the game. Two batters later, catcher
Nicole Horita singled up the middle driving in Kenyon's third run. The lead ballooned to 5-2 after
Danielle Elizarraraz and
Amanda Coyle connected with run-scoring singles. Later in the frame,
Madi Maldonado had a two-run single and
Amanda Ogata smacked a triple scoring Kenyon's final two runs.
Oberlin tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth before the Ladies added two more in the bottom of the inning. Elizarraraz had an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch bringing the count to 11-4.
In the sixth, Kenyon ended the game by run rule as Horita scored after Oberlin tried to catch Coyle stealing and
Mari Colucci closed the affair with a pinch-hit, RBI single.
Horita went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and another driven in while
Austen Whibley, who earned her ninth win in the circle went 3-for-4 with two doubles. Ogata added two hits and two RBI.
GAME TWO
The Ladies looked to be on their way to an even more convincing win in game two before the Yeowomen put up nine runs in the top of the third.
Kenyon started on fire plating four runs in the first highlighted by Whibley's two-run homer to left field. The home team's lead went to 6-0 in the second as Ogata tripled to right center scoring Maldonado and Colucci.
But the Yeowomen, aided by some bad positioning and fielding from the Ladies' defense, came through to take the lead in the top of the third. After the Ladies recorded the second out of the frame on a fielder's choice, the Yeowomen get their next six batters onto base. Dana Rae Goldstein's two-run single brought the score to 6-3 and in the next plate appearance, Sami Miracle singled to right field plating another run. Ariana Enzerink then placed a bunt near the first-base line, but a fielding error allowed another run to score. Oberlin's nine-run inning was later capped off by Gonzalez-Velarde's two-run shot to center field.
As had been the case in games earlier in the season, the Kenyon offense responded again scoring six runs in the third to retake the lead. Coyle had a two-run single and later scored on a wild pitch. The Ladies also tallied a run on a passed ball and got a RBI single from Ogata. Kenyon led 12-9 after three innings.
In the fourth, the Yeowomen went off again plating six runs. Tori Poplaski started Oberlin's scoring with an RBI double. Later in the frame, Emma Downing singled off a hard grounder to third and watched as two scored giving the visitors the lead again, 13-12. The scoring was capped off with a two-run double to left center from Grace Evans.
The fifth inning, which turned out to be the final frame due to NCAA rules, was all Kenyon. Defensively, the Ladies got a double play on a line out to bring their bats back up.
Ogata completed the cycle as she hit her first collegiate homer to right field which also scored
Sophie Silberman. The Ladies retook the lead for good as Elizarrararz hit a bases-clearing triple to right center.
Kenyon's offense was solid again as five different players recorded multiple hits. Ogata went 4-for-4 while Silberman had her best game of her young career going 2-for-2 with three runs scored.
Next up for the Ladies is a NCAC doubleheader at Wittenberg University April 6 starting at 3:30 p.m.
Freshman Amanda Ogata hit for the cycle in game two as the Ladies earned a doubleheader sweep over
