GAMBIER, Ohio – Case Western Reserve University run-ruled the Kenyon Ladies on Wednesday in a pair of non-conference games at the Kenyon Softball Complex. The Spartans rolled in the opener 10-0 and capped that off with a 10-2 win in the second contest. The losses moved the Ladies' recent skid to 10 straight games.
GAME ONE
Six of nine batters recorded hits for the Spartans while the Ladies collected just four hits in the five-inning affair. Defensively, Case pitcher Annie Wennerberg turned in a solid performance as she struck out six batters and induced eight flyouts.
The Spartans got all the run support they needed in the third as a few Kenyon errors allowed the visitors to jump ahead.
In the second plate appearance of the inning, Nicole Doyle reached on an error and later got to second on a passed ball. Katie Wede followed with a single which drove in one run and another error from Kenyon's catcher during the play allowed Doyle to score unearned. Case scored twice more on miscues from the Ladies' pitcher and left fielder.
Kenyon struggled to get anything going offensively as Wennerberg allowed just two hits through the first four innings of play.
The fifth inning saw the Spartans exploded for six more runs. Highlighting the frame was Wede's two-run single up the middle while Lindsey Robinson and Maren Waldner tallied run-scoring singles.
For the Ladies, only senior
Jane Ghublikian recorded multiple hits in the defeat.
GAME TWO
Kenyon fell behind 5-0 before pulling to within three runs in the fourth frame.
The Spartans got a 2-0 lead in the first on a RBI groundout from Waldner and sacrifice fly by Grace Tritchler.
Wede added a run-scoring double in the third and later, Waldner stole home during an attempted pickoff for the visitors' fifth run.
In the next inning, the Ladies finally got on the scoreboard to cut into the 5-0 deficit.
Lindsey Susolik singled which drove in
Madi Maldonado for the home team's first run of the game. Two batters later, freshman
Sophie Silberman connected with a sacrifice fly to left field plating
Grace Pilz.
After that though, Kenyon found just one hit in the final two frames.
On the flip side, Case's offense turned things up again as they totaled five runs in the final two frames. In the fifth, Alex Favazza hit a two-bagger to left center which drove in one and the inning's scoring was capped off by Robinson's RBI single.
The sixth inning brought a 10-2 lead for Case as Tritchler and Wennerberg each had RBI singles.
Kenyon was held to just four hits for the second straight game with three of those coming to Susolik.
Next up for the Ladies is a conference doubleheader this Saturday at home against Allegheny College starting at 1 p.m.
