Ladies end skid, take two from Gators

GAMBIER, Ohio – In what was their most complete doubleheader of the season, the Kenyon College Ladies played spotless defense, got solid pitching and had a couple of clutch hits Saturday to sweep two conference softball games from the visiting Allegheny College Gators. Kenyon rallied in both games and cranked out wins by scores of 4-3 and 3-2.

The victories snapped a ten-game losing skid for the Ladies, who are now 15-18-1 overall and 4-8 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Meanwhile, Allegheny has dropped eight of its last ten games and is now 7-17 overall and 3-9 within in NCAC play.

In game one, trailing 3-0, Kenyon scored all of its runs in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, sophomore Nicole Horita got things started for the Ladies by drawing a walk. Danielle Elizarraraz and Amanda Coyle followed up with a pair of singles that loaded the bases. Leadoff hitter and senior Jane Ghublikian then ripped a line drive double off the left-centerfield wall to score the first two Kenyon runs. Madi Maldonado chased the other two Kenyon runs home with a single up the middle.

In the pitchers' circle, Kenyon starter Austen Whibley, a freshman, gave up three runs on four hits in her first two innings of work, but she settled down after that and took control of the Gators. At one point in the middle of the game, she retired eight straight and, over the last five innings, she allowed just four hits and two walks. Overall, her complete-game, seven-inning win included six strikeouts and three earned runs on eight hits and three walks.

Whibley's day wasn't done after game one. In the third inning of game two, she relieved starter Elizabeth Ovieda, who gave up two earned runs on seven hits. Whibley finished off the game by notching the last 18 outs, while allowing just two hits. She ran into some trouble in the sixth, as she walked the bases loaded, by she worked out of the jam without giving up a run. The two wins on the day improved her season pitching record to 11-12.

The Ladies, who had eight errors in their previous two games, did not commit an error Saturday. Second baseman Sophie Silberman, Coyle, the shortstop and Maldonado, the third baseman, all played a flawless doubleheader that included a trio of double plays.

Kenyon collected its first run of game two without a hit. In the bottom of the first inning, Ghublikian got aboard after being hit by a pitch, she moved to second after Maldonado was walked. Two infield groundouts moved both runners along with Ghublikian scoring on the second of those two.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of third, Kenyon plated the two runs it needed to secure the win. Ghublikian and Maldonado swatted back-to-back singles and both scored when Grace Pilz laced a line drive to the wall in left centerfield.

Overall, Ghublikian was 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI in the two-game set. Maldonado was 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI. Whibley tossed a total of 11 2/3 innings, struck out nine and posted a 1.80 earned run average for the day.

Kenyon will now take a break from NCAC competition and will next host Capital University in a Monday doubleheader that starts at 3 p.m.
