Game Recap: Baseball |

Lords slug their way to split against Wittenberg

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – For the second straight day, the Kenyon College baseball team split a doubleheader against Wittenberg University. This time around, the Lords' bats were on fire as they rolled in game one 14-3 before nearly rallying from a 10-run deficit in game two in a 14-11 defeat.

GAME ONE

Phillip Nam had two home runs including a grand slam in the seventh that pushed Kenyon's lead to 14-3 as the Lords collected nine hits in the opener.

Leading up to that point, both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings before the Lords' offense got into gear.

In the top of the third, Matt von Roemer drove in Jono Chafe with a single through the left side to break the scoreless tie. The next at-bat saw Mikey Arman double to right field scoring two more.

The following inning saw Kenyon add two more runs and move its lead to 5-0. Nam opened the frame with a solo homer and three batters later Matt Contreras doubled to center field plating Max Warren.

Wittenberg responded with its first two runs of the game in the home half of the fourth to cut the deficit to 5-2. They didn't get any closer after that though as the Lords followed with a five-run fifth inning.

Highlighting that inning for Kenyon were two-run doubles from Chafe and Arman. Additionally, von Roemer drew a bases-loaded walk.

The Tigers added just one more run after that before Nam's grand slam in the seventh moved the score to 14-3.

Jesse Bogacz fared well on the mound as he tossed five innings and struck out four while only allowing one earned run.

Offensively, Nam and Arman combined for five hits and nine RBI.

GAME TWO

Kenyon found itself down 14-4 before they made things interesting scoring seven runs in the seventh inning.

The Tigers had attained a 6-2 lead after three innings of play including scoring four runs in the bottom of the third. Noble Moore and Matt Baker each doubled which scored three of the Tigers runs during that frame.

Down 6-2, the Lords responded in the fourth with a pair of runs. Mike Wakin connected with an RBI single while Chris Stevens reached base on a fielding error allowing Wakin to score.

But after that, Wittenberg took complete control of the contest. In the home half of the fourth, the Tigers plated five runs to move their lead to 11-4. Josh Kaplan started the scoring with an RBI single and later scored on a passed ball. Will Cousins rounded out the scoring with a fielder's choice RBI.

Wittenberg then pushed its lead to 14-4 in the sixth with three more runs on a two-run single from Cousins and a RBI single from Dalton Boucher.

Down by 10, the Lords showed some fight in the seventh.

Kenyon's first three runs of the inning came off a passed ball, sacrifice fly and an error in left field. Down 14-7, Stevens added an RBI double plating Andrew Petersdorf. In the next plate appearance, Chris Santucci hit his first collegiate homer, this one a three-run bomb which brought the score to 14-11. That turned out to be final scoring for the Lords who got a double from Ross Scheinberg but nothing more after the home run.

Scheinberg led the Lords with three hits while Cormac Jewell, Jackson Celestin, Wakin and Stevens each collected a pair.

Next up for the Lords is a NCAC East Division doubleheader at The College of Wooster April 27 starting at 1 p.m.
