WOOSTER, Ohio – In a make-up doubleheader that was originally postponed because of poor weather conditions, the Kenyon College baseball team traveled Wednesday to The College of Wooster to take on the division-leading Fighting Scots, who further distanced themselves from the Lords by winning both games.
Kenyon, 20-13 overall and 6-6 in the North Coast Athletic Conference's East Division, fell by scores of 6-4 in game one and 12-1 in game two. With the sweep, Wooster improved to 22-8 overall and 10-2 in the NCAC East.
In game one, Kenyon grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning.
Matt von Roemer led off the inning for the Lords with a single. He moved to third after Wooster issued walks to
Phillip Nam and
Alec Manning. Both von Roemer and Nam scored after
Jono Chafe singled through the right side.
Wooster came right back, however, in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. The Fighting Scots pinned the loss on Kenyon reliever
Sam Gillespie, who allowed two singles and a triple in the inning. The Fighting Scots then tagged
Spencer Byers for a pair of home runs in the fifth inning that increased the Wooster lead to 6-2.
Wooster starting pitcher Michael Houdek went the distance, but before he could close out the game Kenyon scored twice more in the top of the seventh inning. Those runs were posted after Chafe got aboard via a fielder's choice. He moved to third on a double from
Jackson Celestin. Both Chafe and Celestin later scored on a single through the left side struck by
Matt Contreras.
Prior to Gillespie and Byers taking the hill for the Lords, senior
Paul Henshaw got the start. Like his two relievers, Henshaw also pitched two innings. He struck out two and gave up one earned run on three hits.
In game two, a nine-inning contest, Kenyon registered its lone run in the top of the eighth.
Cormac Jewell reached safely on an infield single and took second base on Wooster indifference. A
Max Warren groundout moved Jewell to third and a
John Nahra single through the right side scored him.
Wooster starting pitcher Nanak Saran went seven innings and kept the Lords off the scoreboard. He allowed just four hits and struck out four.
Kenyon deployed six different arms with
Jesse Bogacz getting the start. With a pre-determined, two-inning limit placed on each pitcher, Bogacz gave up just one run during his time on the hill. He walked two, struck out two and allowed one hit.
Of the six Kenyon pitchers,
Connor Farrell fared best. He threw two shutout innings while yielding just one hit and one walk.
Most Kenyon bats were held in check by Wooster pitching, but Celestin, Jewell and
Alec Manning all managed a pair of hits in the doubleheader. Contreras and Chafe both chalked up two RBI.
Kenyon will now turn its attention to the weekend four-game series against Allegheny College. Those conference doubleheaders will be held Saturday and Sunday at McCloskey Field and both have noon start times.
Cormac Jewell was one of three Kenyon hitters to have two hits in Wednesday's doubleheader,
but the Lords ended up being swept by the division-leading Wooster Fighting Scots.
