BLUFFTON, Ohio – After starting out the Bluffton University Sommer Center Spiketacular with two big wins Friday, the Kenyon College volleyball team could not duplicate the feat Saturday. The Ladies finished off the two-day tournament with a 3-1 loss to the host Beavers and then a 3-0 loss to Ohio Northern University.
Bluffton, now 6-3, dropped the Ladies by a score of 25-21, 21-25, 25-23, 27-25. Ohio Northern, owner of a 6-1 record, didn't let the Ladies get as close and closed out the tournament with a 25-11, 25-10, 25-18 victory.
Against Bluffton, the Ladies piled up 55 kills in the four sets, but also recorded 26 errors.
Delaney Swanson and
Mackenzie Bruzzio both had 14 kills, while
Schuyler Stupica chalked up a dozen.
Jensen Shurbert amassed 48 assists and Swanson tacked on 19 digs. Shurbert also had four service aces, while Swanson posted six.
After splitting four-point wins in the first and second matches, the Ladies dropped the final two sets to the Beavers by two points each. Down the stretch in the third set, Kenyon pulled within one point three different times. In the fourth set, the Ladies simply didn't close the deal. Up 24-19, the Kenyon women gave up eight of the last nine points and saw Bluffton steal the set and the match.
Ohio Northern, a perennial powerhouse coming off a 24-6 season, never really gave Kenyon a chance to get close. The Polar Bears threw 44 kills down at an attack percentage of .407. Meanwhile, the Ladies managed 22 kills and hit at just a .075 rate.
Bruzzio accounted for seven kills and Stupica had five. Shurbert served up another dozen assists and also lead the team with seven digs.
At the end of the Spiketacular, Swanson was named to the All-Tournament team.
After a busy start to the season, the Ladies (6-3) have several days away from competition and will next host the Kenyon Invitational, a two-day, five-team tournament that will get under Friday evening in the Kenyon Athletic Center.
Losses to Bluffton and Ohio Northern on Saturday dropped the Ladies record to 6-3.
