GAMBIER, Ohio – The Kenyon College field hockey team had to put in overtime Sunday afternoon, but it was rewarded for its efforts with a come-from-behind victory over the Wittenberg University Tigers by the count of 2-1. Junior
Katelyn Hutchinson scored both Kenyon goals to keep her squad unbeaten in North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) play.
After a sluggish first half in which the Tigers scored their lone goal in the game's tenth minute of action, the Ladies came storming back in the second half controlling much of the pace of the game before Hutchinson scored the equalizer in the 51st minute.
Hutchinson was in a two-on-one situation, but was left all alone when the defender expected a pass. The resulting sequence left Hutchinson one-on-one with the goalkeeper and she did not miss.
The game then went into overtime and Hutchinson found herself in the right position after a long sprint up the field from
Shannon Hart. Hart started the action near the cage and back-handed the ball into the circle. From there, the ball ricocheted off the Wittenberg goalkeeper and came out to Hutchinson, who lofted it over the line to seal the victory. The two-goal effort pushed Hutchinson's season total to six, which now leads the Ladies.
Junior goalkeeper
Sarah Speroff earned the victory with 12 saves. No save was bigger than here one-on-one stop against Audrey Coler with less than 10 minutes left to play. Junior
Paige Beyer also recorded a defensive save when she hit away a rebound that got past Speroff after she made an initial save.
The Ladies will move forward to next weekend facing anotherback-to-back with the first matchup against Earlham College on September 24 followed by a rematch of last year's NCAC Tournament Championship game with DePauw University on September 25.
