RICHMOND, Ind. – After fighting back from an early deficit in its last game, the Kenyon College field hockey team was not able to complete another comeback Saturday afternoon, as the Earlham College Quakers upset the Ladies by a 2-1 final score.
Kenyon had not suffered a loss to any team in the North Coast Athletic Conference besides DePauw and Denison universities in any of the last three seasons. Kenyon won the last 25 meetings with Earlham, a program that last defeated Kenyon in the 2003 season.
The Quakers (5-4, 2-3 NCAC) started off the scoring with a goal in the 19th minute by Kaitlyn Brunner. They carried that advantage into the halftime break.
Katelyn Hutchinson then notched the equalizer for Kenyon, as she found the back of the cage in the game's 43rd minute. She's now scored in five of her last six games and has scored the team's last three goals, spanning the last two games.
Earlham then broke the tie in the 61st minute on a goal from sophomore Isabella Grasso.
The Quakers outshot Kenyon 17-14 and held the advantage of shots on goal by a wider 12-7 margin.
Sarah Speroff saved nine shots while teammate
Sarah Bauman added a defensive save. Earlham goalkeeper Camille van der Vaart made six saves.
The loss snapped Kenyon's seven-game, conference, winning streak and was one of just three NCAC, regular-season losses for the Ladies over the last three seasons.
Tomorrow presents another opportunity for the Kenyon women as they travel to DePauw. Revenge will be on their mind as they look to get back on the winning side, as well as avenge last year's loss to the Tigers in the NCAC tournament final.
