TIFFIN, Ohio – The Kenyon Lords withstood a hard-fought effort from the Heidelberg University Student Princes on Sunday afternoon and earned a 1-0 win to improve their record to 2-0 in the early season.
Competition this time around was much different than the previous two occasions that these schools met. Kenyon had won the last two meetings, once in the regular season last season and in the NCAA Tournament in 2014, by a combined 7-0 count.
This day was much different as the Student Princes put a lot of pressure on the Lords. Early on, Heidelberg's Rodrigo Meza got two attempts off on goal within the first 90 seconds. But senior keeper
Sam Clougher was there to keep the score at 0-0.
At the 27th minute, Heidelberg got its final good look of the half but again, Clougher was in position to record another save.
With Kenyon hanging tough, the scoreless tie came to a close with about two minutes until the break. Junior defender
Billy O'Neill navigated along the right wing and crossed a pass into the box. One bounce of the ball came to fellow defender
Henry Myers and he headed it home for what turned out to be the only goal of the match.
Second-half action saw the Student Princes continue to press the Lords' defense. Greg Raimondo got his team's first look on goal in the second half but it didn't ring true.
Heidelberg had one more quality shot in the half until getting desperate at the end. In the final two and a half minutes, the home team had a pair of corners and two shots, and with eight seconds left, got a free kick near the 18-yard box looking for the equalizer. That goal never came though and Kenyon escaped.
The Student Princes actually out-shot the Lords 13-12 in the match.
Next up for Kenyon is a trip to Pittsburgh to face The Catholic University of America in a neutral site match on September 10 at 3 p.m.
Keeper Sam Clougher came up with five saves on Sunday afternoon as the Lords won at Heidelberg
