WOOSTER, Ohio – The Kenyon College women's basketball team survived a scare Wednesday evening by outscoring The College of Wooster, 16-1, in double overtime. The late surge, directed by seniors
Miranda Diesz and
Sidney Cera, lifted the Ladies to an 80-65 victory at Timken Gymnasium.
Wooster (1-16, 0-8 NCAC) jumped out to an 8-0 lead to start the game and rode that momentum throughout regulation and into the first overtime period. The Fighting Scots held a 19-13 lead after one quarter and a 32-28 lead at the break. Kenyon (13-5, 7-2 NCAC) struggled to find its shooting touch and only held the lead twice in the first half of play.
The Fighting Scots maintained the lead in the third quarter, moving ahead by as many as seven points. In the fourth, however, Kenyon went on an 8-0 run, turning a 44-37 deficit into a 45-44 lead with less than seven minutes left in the quarter. The run featured four points each from Diesz and
Charlotte Bussema.
The two teams then traded the lead over the final few minutes of regulation. With 1:28 left, Wooster moved ahead by five, but Kenyon senior
Bailey Dominguez retaliated with a three-pointer. The Ladies were then forced to foul with 19 ticks left. Wooster's Aki Shurelds made one of two free throws and left the door open for Kenyon, which saw freshman
Paige Matijasich sink a desperation three-pointer from the left wing. That wild shot, with eight seconds left, tied the game up at 58-58 and eventually forced overtime.
The tables turned in the first extra session. Cera connected on a pair of free throws that gave Kenyon a 64-61 edge with just a few seconds remaining. Following a Wooster timeout, the Fighting Scots got their own desperation buzzer-beater to fall after Kylie Orr heaved up a three-pointer, also from the left wing.
After Wooster scored the first point of the second overtime, it seemed all the momentum was with the Fighting Scots. That point, however, would be the end of the road for Wooster. Kenyon went on a 16-0 tear to close out the game and earn the win. During that final run, Cera had five points on 5-of-6 shooting at the free throw line. She also chalked up three steals and a rebound. Diesz duplicated Cera's performance at the line and added an assist, a steal and a rebound.
Overall, Kenyon had six players ring up double-digit scoring marks. Diesz led the way with 13 points and 10 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double. Dominguez hit a trio of three-pointers and finished with 11 points, while Cera, Bussema,
Lane Davis and
Jessica Gerber each chipped in with ten points. Davis added nine rebounds and both Cera and Diesz had four assists.
At the free throw line, Kenyon was 21-of-25 (84.0 percent). That included going 14-of-16 (87.5 percent) in the two overtime periods.
The win was Kenyon's fourth in a row and fifth in the Ladies' last six games. Up next is a Saturday trip to Allegheny College for 1 p.m. conference contest with the Gators.
