CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The Kenyon Lords picked up a crucial road victory on Saturday as they blew past Wabash College in the second half en route to a 70-45 victory in North Coast Athletic Conference competition.
In addition to this being the Lords' first road victory of the season, Kenyon held Wabash to a 24.5 percent shooting effort. That percentage is the lowest yielded by the Lords since the turn of the millennium.
Leading the way for Kenyon (5-14, 4-8 NCAC) for the second consecutive game was
Bennett Grigull. He tallied 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting. Junior
Alexander Powell came off the bench to add 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting, while
Phillip Crampton contributed a dozen points. In his first career start, freshman
Ryan O'Neil came up with eight points and dished out a game-high five assists, while
Alex Laub scored eight. Rounding out Kenyon's best individual marks was
Carter Powell who grabbed a game-high eight boards and had four dimes.
A little over three-and-a-half-minutes into the game, the Lords got off to a great start with a 7-0 lead which was capped off by a Grigull three-ball. Wabash responded with a 13-2 run and claimed a 13-9 advantage at the 12:19 mark after Ronald Ryan's three-pointer.
About two minutes later, Kenyon reclaimed the lead as
Matt Shifrin found Crampton in the paint for a layup, pushing the visitors ahead 14-13. Wabash later tied it at 20, but
Alexander Powell's layup at 3:41 put the Lords back up for good and they took a 25-22 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, Kenyon pulled away.
With the score at 29-26 Lords with 17:24 left, Kenyon hit an 8-0 stretch capped off by a Crampton three-pointer to go up their biggest margin, 37-26. Wabash got the game to within single digits a few times after that before Kenyon put the game away.
Over a span of 6:22, Kenyon outscored Wabash 12-4 and took a 17-point lead (56-39) following an O'Neil bucket. By the end of the contest, Kenyon had gotten their biggest margin and final tally.
During the second stanza, the Lords were efficient, hitting 53.3 percent from the field (16-of-30) and they were 6-of-11 (54.5%) from three-point range. On the other end, the Little Giants hit just five shots in 25 attempts.
Next up for Kenyon is a home date with Wittenberg University on February 1 at 7:30 p.m.
