Lords leave Texas without a win

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Trinity University forward Jayden Holden connected on a three-pointer with 38 seconds left in Tuesday night's game and lifted the Tigers to a 74-71 victory over the visiting Kenyon College Lords. The loss made Kenyon 0-for-2 in Texas and 2-10 for the season.

The game was close from start to finish. It featured a dozen lead changes and ten tied scores. At no point did either team pull ahead by more than six points.

The last of those ten tied scores came with just 2:56 left on the clock. Kenyon junior Alexander Powell knocked down a jumper that squared things up at 63-63. The Tigers responded with a couple of free throws from Brooks Mays, but Kenyon countered with Bennett Grigull's three-pointer from the right corner that put the Lords ahead 66-65.

That basket gave Kenyon its first lead since the 11:15 mark of the second half, but it also marked Kenyon's last lead. Trinity (5-6) got buckets from Danny Rivara and Matt Jones before Grigull connected on a two-pointer to pull the Lords within one at 69-68 with 43 seconds left.

Five seconds after Grigull's field goal, Holden buried his three-pointer that gave Trinity a four-point lead and all but sealed the Lords' fate.

Kenyon turned the ball over on its next possession, missed two of its final three shots and was forced to foul Trinity, which connected on just two of its last four free throws, but still managed to hang on for the three-point win.

Powell ended up tying his single-game best with 22 points. Grigull also notched his career-best with 16 points and Ben Stern scored 13 for a Kenyon team that shot 40.3 percent (25-of-62) overall and 32.4 percent (11-of-34) from long range. Powell and Grigull were both 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, while Stern was 3-of-5. Stern also led Kenyon with six rebounds.

Trinity took ten fewer shots than Kenyon, but sank them at a rate of 46.2 percent (24-of-52). The Tigers fired at 50 percent from three (8-of-16) and held an eight-point advantage over Kenyon at the free throw line.

Over the last four games, including Tuesday's, Kenyon opponents attempted a combined total of 126 free throws, while the Lords attempted just 58 in that same span.

Kenyon now returns home to get back to its North Coast Athletic Conference schedule, which will resume Saturday with a 3 p.m. contest at DePauw University (7-5).
