Ohio Wesleyan slows down Kenyon attack

DELAWARE, Ohio – Ohio Wesleyan University's defense was solid all night as they limited Kenyon College to a .106 attack percentage and amassed its second-highest dig total of the season (73) on Wednesday in a North Coast Athletic Conference volleyball match at Branch Rickey Arena.

The loss moved Kenyon's record to 12-8 and 2-2 in the conference.

Mackenzie Bruzzio was Kenyon's most efficient player as she tallied 10 kills with a .233 attack mark. Delaney Swanson added her fourth double-double of the year with 11 kills and 10 digs while Jensen Shurbert dished out 25 assists. Defensively, Rachael Thorson collected a team-high 17 digs while Alexi Donnelly added 10 more.

A kill from Lauren Carpenter sparked a 7-2 run for the Battling Bishops in the first set. With the score at 11-7 after a Swanson kill, Carpenter connected on a pass from Molly Jewett to get Ohio Wesleyan moving. The Ladies aided the home team with three errors while Carpenter and Brianna La Croix added a few kills. That pushed the score to 18-9 and OWU later won 25-17.

Things were awfully close in set two after an Ohio Wesleyan service error brought the score to 6-5, Battling Bishops. That was followed, though, by a massive 9-2 stretch from the home team. Three straight kills started the run for OWU, and later they went up 15-7 following a Kenyon error, its third of the run. Kenyon shielded off three straight set points to bring the score to 24-19, but that was the closest they got as La Croix ended the second with her 13th kill of the match.

Third-set action turned out to be the best. Kenyon got out to a 6-3 advantage following an attack error from the Battling Bishops. A few sequences later, Ohio Wesleyan went up for the first time, 13-12, after the Ladies committed an error on a bad set. That was a part of an 11-3 run for Ohio Wesleyan who went up 22-15.  Kenyon nearly fought back as a Bruzzio kill made the score 23-20. However, a kill from Chloe Hampton and service ace from Nina Carmichael-Tanaka ended the match.

Kenyon, which has split its last 10 matches, will return home to face DePauw University on October 14 at 1 p.m. for the team's Dig Pink match at Tomsich Arena.
