Ladies dominate Tigers, earn season sweep

GAMBIER, Ohio – For just the second time since 1986, the Kenyon Ladies field hockey team swept the regular-season series against DePauw University after a 1-0 win on Sunday at McBride Field.

Kenyon, who defeated the Tigers 4-3 last month, improved to 12-2 and 9-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference and maintained its first-place hold by one game over Denison University.

The Ladies controlled the match out-shooting the Tigers 15-3 while also holding a whopping 14-3 advantage in penalty corners.

After notching four penalty corners and three shots within the match's first 22 minutes, Kenyon broke through at 23:07. With defender and primary corner inserter Molly Keen along the left end line, a pass came to senior Katelyn Hutchinson to the top and she fired into the right side of the cage after a deflection.

For Keen, it was her seventh assist of the season while Hutchinson's goal was her 11th. Both marks are currently tied for the NCAC lead.

That turned out to be the only goal of the match as the Ladies missed a couple opportunities the rest of the way after nine more penalty corners.

On the other end, the Kenyon defense was outstanding. There were just two shot attempts on goal allowed to DePauw. One came at 37:27 to Tori Wittemann and the other came to Paige Berliner at 66:59. Sarah Speroff, who notched her sixth shutout of the season, saved both shots.

Next on the schedule for Kenyon is a trip to Ohio Wesleyan University on October 21 at 11 a.m.
