– The Kenyon men's soccer team earned a big 3-1 win against rival Ohio Wesleyan University on Tuesday night to remain in first place of the North Coast Athletic Conference. Kenyon improved its record to 11-2-2 and 6-0 in conference action.
It was the third straight regular-season win in the series for the Lords versus Ohio Wesleyan, a feat last accomplished from 1954-56.
In Tuesday night's match, the Lords controlled possession and outshot OWU 19-6.
The Lords dominated the first 25 minutes of the half. Kenyon nearly broke through at 2:47 when
Henry Myers' header was saved by Ohio Wesleyan's Brady Whittenkind right at the goal line.
A bit later,
Greg McNeer shot from the far sideline after OWU's goalie J.P. Baughman came out of the goalie's box. His shot, though, sailed just over the crossbar.
Kenyon's offensive efforts then broke through at the 16th minute. A deflected ball came to
Alberto Carmona along the right side and the junior rocketed a shot to the left corner for the match's first goal.
Just a few seconds later, Myers stole a pass inside midfield and found
Brice Koval in front of the net. Koval then delivered his fourth goal of the season. That moved the score to 2-0.
That two-goal lead remained until 33:44. A failed clear by the Lords' defense wound up at the feet of Will Sharer who fired from about 20 yards out to the left side.
After that though, Kenyon keeper
Ian McInturf picked up a couple of saves to keep the score at 2-1.
In the second half, OWU never found any real traction as they were held to just a single shot.
On the other side, the Lords found another goal to put the match out of reach. With senior
Billy O'Neill along the right side, a cross came to Myers who headed it home from the middle of the box. It was his 12th goal of the season.
Next on the schedule for Kenyon is a home date against DePauw University on October 21 at 3:30 p.m. It will be Senior Day for the Lords.
Alberto Carmona scored for the Lords as Kenyon earned a convincing 3-1 road win at rival
