Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Early run keeps Lords ahead of Gators

MEADVILLE, Pa. – During an eight-minute span in the first half of Wednesday's game at Allegheny College, the Kenyon College men's basketball team put together an 18-5 run that paved the way toward a 64-62 North Coast Athletic Conference victory.

After the host Gators opened a 14-10 lead, thanks in part to six points from Jamison Nee, the Lords charged back. Back-to-back buckets from Alexander Powell and Will Sigl tied things up. Sigl then knocked down one more and Carter Powell followed up to give the Lords an 18-14 lead.

Matt Shifrin then jumped into the mix, canning a three-ball and then dishing to Phillip Crampton, who also connected for three. Shifrin then came away with a steal and raced the other way to convert a layup that gave Kenyon a 26-14 lead.

With 4:17 left in the half, Carter Powell tossed in a pair of free throws to complete the 18-5 run. Allegheny answered by cutting the deficit down to six, but as the teams headed into halftime, Kenyon opened a 12-point advantage with a 39-27 lead.

The lead inflated to as many as 16 points in the second half, but the final ten minutes of the game were a real struggle for Kenyon.

A three-pointer from Jordan Rawls pulled the Gators within eight points at 57-49 with 9:35 left. A little more than three minutes after that, Kenyon sophomore Ben Stern dropped in his own three-ball and Kenyon moved ahead 64-53.

Surprisingly, that was it for Kenyon. The Lords (4-2, 1-1 NCAC) did not score another point over the final six minutes of the game. That opened the door for the Gators to chip away at the lead. Nijon Kirkman scored the game's next four points and Zach Shedd followed with three more. With 1:49 left, Rawls hit a short jumper that got the Gators within two.

The Lords turned the ball over and missed a shot on their final two possessions, but Allegheny couldn't capitalize. At the other end of the court, the Gators (3-4, 1-1 NCAC) missed their final three shots, including a three-pointer from Nee just before the final buzzer.

Shifrin, who scored eight in that important first-half run, finished the game with 12 points for the Lords. Crampton recorded 11 points and, for the second straight game, Alex Laub posted a double-double. He led Kenyon with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Rawls led all players with 21 points and 11 rebounds, but the Gators, as a team, shot just 34.8 percent (24-of-69) on the night.

Kenyon's last three games, including this one against Allegheny, were decide by a combined total of five points. The Lords will try to create a little more breathing room Saturday, when they host the Wabash College Little Giants at 3 p.m.
