Ladies set new hits record in doubleheader split

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Following a 7-4 loss to University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, the Kenyon Ladies softball team came back with an offensive vengeance in game two against Alverno College scoring 17 runs and collecting 21 hits. That hit total broke a 10-year-old record previously set against Oberlin College on April 13, 2007 when Kenyon registered 20 hits.

GAME ONE

Kenyon got off to a great start against UMass Dartmouth as they plated three runs right from the get-go.

Britny Patterson's groundout to first base moved Allison Stratman and Madi Maldonado into scoring position and in the next at-bat; Lauren Graf drove them in with a single to left field. Kenyon's third run came off the bat of Grace Pilz who brought home Graf.

The hot start wasn't converted on the defensive end though as Kenyon missed a few routine plays in the bottom of the first.

The Corsairs tied it up all due to errors along the infield. Emily Colton scored from third after a failed pickoff and in the next plate appearance, a grounder to the pitching circle resulted in another miscue allowing McKenzie Joyce to score. UMass Dartmouth's third run came after a throwing error from the Ladies' first baseman.

After those errors, virtually nothing went Kenyon's way.

In the third, the Corsairs took the lead for good as Hannah Smith and Colton each had RBI singles.

UMass Dartmouth's seventh run came in the fourth when Rebecca Field singled through the right side driving in Marissa Spinuzzi.

Kenyon's only other run was delivered off the bat of Sophie Silberman who drove in Maldonado.

From the second inning on, the Ladies' collected just a pair of hits and got a total of five on base.

GAME TWO

The Ladies scored in every inning for the first time this season as they overcame a pair of deficits and eventually prevailed 17-10.

Alverno got its early lead with two out as Sara Redlin got a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. That was followed in the next at-bat by a bases-loaded walk to Megan Hernandez. The Inferno's final runs came on a bases-clearing double by Olivia Schneider.

Kenyon's offense then got things going in the home half of the first. Patterson had a two-run double and later stole home while Silberman and Nicole Horita each had run-scoring hits.

After a total of three runs were tallied by the Ladies in the second and third frames giving them an 8-6 lead, Alverno came back to retake the lead with four scores in the fourth.

The Inferno had three straight RBI singles with their last coming from Carina Jimenez on a bunt. Their fourth run came after Andie Vandertie touched home on a wild pitch.

Despite relinquishing the lead, Kenyon kept plugging away on the offensive end.

In the bottom of the fifth, Maldonado registered a run-scoring three-bagger plating Amanda Coyle which tied the game. In the immediate at-bat that followed, Amanda Ogata drove in Maldonado pushing the Ladies ahead for good, 11-10.

Patterson and Juliana Delsante added RBIs in the frame as well.

Then in the sixth, Kenyon's new single-game hits record fell as Graf doubled to centerfield scoring Stratman and Ogata.

A whopping seven different players recorded multiple hits for the Ladies. Patterson led the way going 4-for-5 with four RBI and three doubles. In the circle, Keely Sweet picked up her fifth win of the season tossing four innings, allowing five runs while striking out five.

Kenyon wraps up its spring break trip tomorrow in Naples with games against Edgewood College and Geneva College.
