BROOKLANDVILLE, Md. – The Kenyon College Lords and the Franklin and Marshall College Diplomats continued their annual meeting Sunday, this time on a neutral-site field at Saint Paul's School. The result, however, was a familiar one for the Diplomats, who logged a 20-10 victory and extended their winning streak against Kenyon to five games in the past five seasons.
Despite the final ten-goal differential, the Lords (1-3) didn't let Franklin and Marshall (3-2) slip out of their reach until the final quarter of play. Kenyon played within two goals of the Diplomats for each of the first the quarters. The Lords trailed 11-7 at the half and 16-10 after three quarters of play.
Franklin and Marshall (3-2) scored the final goal of that third period and then secured the victory by outscoring the Lords, 4-0, in the final 15 minutes of play. Kenyon pulled within five goals twice in the second half, but the Diplomats answered each time and ended up scoring seven of the game's final nine goals.
The 20 goals scored by Franklin and Marshall sounded alarm bells for Kenyon, typically a strong defensive team that has not allowed that many goals in a game since a 23-2 defeat to No. 4-ranked Denison University deep into the 2014 season.
On the offensive end, three Kenyon players came up with three-point games.
Alex Lopez tallied two goals and an assist, while both
Chris Ferraro and
Pierce Kraft notched a goal and two assists.
Emilio Sosa and
Jonah Florence both scored two goals and
Robert Jacobs contributed a goal and an assist.
Franklin and Marshall turned to stellar freshman attack Kevin Mollihan to pace its offense. He responded with seven goals and two assists, improving his season totals to 21 goals and six assists in five games.
Mollihan's first goal didn't hit twine until early in the second quarter with his team in front by a 5-3 count. He scored twice more in the quarter and twice more in each the third and fourth quarters.
The Diplomats jumped out an early 3-0 lead, but Kenyon answered with goals from Sosa and Florence. Two more Franklin and Marshall goals were scored before Kenyon freshman Ian Griffin ended the quarter with his fifth goal of the season.
In the second, the Diplomats netted three more in a row before Kenyon registered three of the game's next four goals and four of the next seven. Lopez was responsible for two of those Kenyon goals.
Mollihan opened the third quarter with the first two goals and the Diplomats never let Kenyon get closer than five goals the rest of the way.
Overall, Franklin and Marshall outshot Kenyon, 57-23. That kept Kenyon goalkeepers
Reed Levesque and
Gabriel Avis plenty busy, as they combined for 21 saves.
The Lords will remain in Maryland and begin preparation for Washington College (5-1), a team they will face Wednesday at 1 p.m.
During Sunday's 20-10 loss to Franklin and Marshall College, Kenyon senior Alex Lopez recorded two goals and one assist.
