GAMBIER, Ohio – In a span of three minutes Saturday, the Kenyon College men's lacrosse team converted four DePauw University penalties into four goals, turning a close game into a dominating 13-5 victory in the North Coast Athletic Conference opener at McBride Field.
With Kenyon clinging to a 7-5 lead, DePauw's Charlie Yorke was whistled for unnecessary roughness at the conclusion of the third period. Kenyon's
Alex Lopez converted the man-up advantage into a goal off a pass from
Jonah Florence.
Over the next three minutes, there were three more penalties on DePauw.
Emilio Sosa,
Robert Jacobs and
Chris Ferraro converted on all of them. Florence assisted on three of the four goals during the run and finished with a team-high four assists and four points.
Sosa scored the first two goals of the game, each off an assist from
Ian Griffith. Lopez scored midway through the first quarter to give the Lords a 3-0 lead.
DePauw narrowed the gap to one during the second period, but the Tigers couldn't catch up, as
Pierce Kraft netted three goals in the frame to boost Kenyon to a 6-3 lead at the break.
DePauw's Steen Jorgensen scored in the first minute of the third to cut the gap, however, Jacobs answered a minute later to put the margin back to three.
Ferraro then tacked on three more goals in the fourth quarter as the Lords outscored the Tigers, 6-0, in that final frame.
Gabriel Avis got his first start of the season in front of the Kenyon cage and the senior goalkeeper picked up the win after totaling 10 saves.
Kenyon is now 2-3 overall and 1-0 in NCAC play. DePauw dropped t0 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The Lords next travel to Otterbein University for a non-conference game Wednesday at 7 p.m.
