Late rally sparks Lords to doubleheader split

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – In Kenyon's opener on Tuesday against Albright College, the Lords nearly rallied to tie the game in the ninth before falling 6-5. Then in game two against Messiah College, Kenyon found itself down once again in the last inning, but this time got all the runs needed and a few more and won 7-6.

GAME ONE

Mikey Arman's run-scoring single in the fifth inning – his second of the game up to that point – of Tuesday morning's contest against the Lions moved Kenyon up 3-1 about midway through the game.

Prior to that, he had an RBI single in the third and an RBI groundout in the first.

But a 3-1 deficit for Albright was erased in the home half of the fifth. The Lions tallied three runs as Jimmy Gentry scored on a wild pitch and Zach Krause delivered a two-run single through the right side. Albright added its final two runs in the seventh as Tanner Brescansine sent a single up the middle plating a pair of runners.

Kenyon then made things interesting in the ninth.

Matt von Roemer – who continued his steady early-season performance in the batter's box by going 4-for-5 – got to second base after a Lions error. Arman then delivered again with another RBI single plating von Roemer.

The Lords' next tally came as Phillip Nam singled through the left side scoring Max Warren. Albright then switched pitchers and the move worked as a 6-4-3 double play was turned ending Kenyon's chance at tying the game.

GAME TWO

The Lords got out to a 3-0 lead including two runs in the fourth as Nam connected with an RBI single and Alec Manning registering a triple to right center plating Nam.

But four runs in the bottom of the fifth from the Falcons switched up the dynamic of the game. Colin Fry got Messiah's first run of the game as he collected a run-scoring single. A few batters later, Josh Hayner hit a two-run single to right center capping off Messiah's four-run frame.

The Falcons tacked on one more run in the sixth and eighth innings to move their lead to 6-3.

From the fifth through eighth innings, Kenyon was unable to cut into the deficit. But in the ninth, that changed.

The Lords had two on with one out and Cormac Jewell got the team within two runs as he connected with a single through the right side scoring Eric DelRosso. In the next at-bat, Arman continued his steady plate performance with a two-run triple to right center scoring two more and tying the game at 6. The go ahead play was completed right after that as Nam singled to left field scoring Arman.

In the home half of the ninth, Luke Calcei came in and shut down Messiah as he retired the side and secured the comeback win for Kenyon. He earned his third save of the season in the process.

Offensively, the Lords got multiple hits from Nam, Arman and Jackson Celestin.

Kenyon has a couple days before playing again. They'll face College of Mount St. Vincent on March 17 for a doubleheader starting at 10 a.m.
