FORT PIERCE, Fla. -- The Kenyon College baseball club picked up a doubleheader sweep of the College of Mount St. Vincent Dolphins on Friday and moved to .500 on the season with a 7-7 record. The Lords offense led the way with its two highest, seven-inning run totals of the season in 13-6 and 11-5 victories.
GAME 1
Playing as the road team in game one, Kenyon wasted no time jumping on the scoreboard when
Phillip Nam crushed his first home run of the season, scoring three. In the second frame, the Lords shifted to a small-ball approach and plated four runs on three singles from
Max Warren,
Cormac Jewell and Nam.
One more rally in the third inning produced three more runs, pushing the Lords out to a 7-0 lead.
Jackson Celestin ripped an RBI double to center field and eventually scored himself due to an error in the Dolphins' outfield.
Matt von Roemer then provided the last run of the inning with an RBI single.
Starting pitcher
Will Allen utilized the run support from his offense and went the distance in his first win of the season. Allen tossed seven innings, allowing just four earned runs off seven hits, while striking out six against two walks and two hit-by-pitches.
Allen did run into some trouble in the fourth inning. The two hit batsmen, along with three singles, aided the Dolphins in plating five runs. The Dolphins then added an unearned run in the sixth inning, cutting their deficit to 10-5.
In the seventh inning, Warren tripled home two runs and scored on a wild pitch to finalize the score at 13-5. Warren tied for the team lead with three hits in game one, finishing a home run shy of the cycle. Celestin and von Roemer had three hits, as well. The Lords totaled 16 hits with eight of nine batters putting at least one into play.
GAME 2
As the home team in game two, the Lords once again jumped out to a 7-0 lead.
Patrick O'Leary started things off with a single that scored two in the bottom of the second inning.
The Lords opened things up an inning later, plating five in the third.
Mikey Arman started that rally by delivering a two-run homer, his first of the year.
Alec Manning followed up with a double that also scored two runs and the last run of the inning came as the result of a double steal, with Warren swiping second and Manning scoring.
Again, trouble struck Kenyon's starting pitcher in the fourth frame as
Ross Scheinberg surrendered a three-run home run to Michael Kochen, bringing the Dolphins back to a score of 7-3. A sacrifice fly in the fourth and a double in the top of the fifth plated two more runs and the Kenyon lead was in jeopardy.
The bats responded, however in the bottom half of the inning with another two-run double from O'Leary, who would come around to score on a von Roemer single. That put the Lords in front 10-5.
In the sixth inning,
Gaige Howard picked up his team-leading third hit of the game, one that plated Arman and closed out the scoring at 11-5.
On the mound, Scheinberg struck out eight in six innings of work. He allowed five earned runs off nine hits and two walks.
Will Oakley worked a perfect seventh to close out the victory, striking out two.
The 5-for-9 day at the plate between the two games pushed von Roemer's season batting average to .508. He also added two stolen bases and is now a perfect 10-for-10 on attempts this season.
Kenyon has won six of its last seven games and will wrap up its Florida trip tomorrow with a 10 a.m. doubleheader against Gettysburg College.
Matt von Roemer went a combined 5-for-9 in Friday's doubleheader and steered the Lords to
13-6 and 11-5 victories against the College of Mount St. Vincent Dolphins. von Roemer is
now batting .508 on the season as the Lords evened up their record at 7-7.
