Lords drop two on final day in Florida

FORT PIERCE, Fla. - After a recent run of wins in the past week, the Kenyon College baseball team suffered a setback against Gettysburg College on Saturday. The Lords (7-9) struggled to score in both games of the doubleheader, falling to the Bullets 5-0 in the first game and 10-3 in the second.

Second innings proved profitable for Gettysburg (6-6-1), yielding the Bullets two decisive runs in the first game and a crushing four-run total in the second.

In game one, the Bullets entered the bottom of the second with a 1-0 lead. Senior J.J. Lucido walked and then raced to third base when freshman Tate Frodsham singled down the right field line. On the next play, freshman Tyler Mitchell unleashed a double that notched a run from Lucido, and Frodsham rounded third to score right behind him.

Gettysburg scored two more runs in the fifth inning to fortify the lead, and strong defense from the Bullets left Kenyon with the goose egg. The Lords managed just five hits and squandered several scoring opportunities, leaving nine on base in the game. Gettysburg starting pitcher Rich Power did his part to frustrate Kenyon's batters, striking out six.

As they had in the first game, the Bullets scored in a hurry to start game two. In another strong second inning, the Bullets pushed their early 2-0 lead to 6-0 with the biggest hits of the day. After Frodsham reached first, Mitchell launched a triple into left center and sent Frodsham flying home. Mitchell scored on the next play when junior Chuck Probst blasted a home run to left field. The Bullets snagged one more run from Giovinco, who was batted in by Anderson just before the Lords forced the Bullets off the field.

Gettysburg scored twice more before the Lords took advantage of pitching mistakes for their first runs of the day. In the bottom of the sixth, with bases loaded, Bullets starter Danny Brace hit Joaquin Murrieta with a pitch, advancing all runners and sending Gaige Howard to score.

Reliever Will Wortmann came to the mound for Brace, but he walked Eric DelRosso, allowing another unchallenged run to score, this time from Alec Manning.

For Kenyon's last run of the sixth, Matt von Roemer hit a sacrifice fly to plate Patrick O'Leary and brought the score to 8-3, but the comeback stopped there. The Bullets responded with two runs of their own in the top of the seventh, and the Lords left the bottom of the inning empty-handed with three quick outs in as many at-bats.

With two wins against the College of Mount St. Vincent on Friday, Kenyon reached the .500 mark for the first time this season and won seven of their last 10 games. Saturday's losses to Gettysburg make for a disappointing end to Kenyon's spring-break games in Florida, but the Lords will have ten days to rest before chasing a return to form. Their next game will be in New Concord, Ohio, where they will face off against Muskingum University in a non-conference contest at 4 p.m.
