Pitching steers Kenyon to win at Muskingum

NEW CONCORD, Ohio – The Kenyon College baseball team, playing for the first time since returning from Florida ten days ago, unleashed Tuesday a long list of pitchers who combined to hold the Muskingum University Fighting Muskies to four hits at Mose Morehead Field. Their performance took most the pressure off the Kenyon offense, which needed only a handful of runs to chalk up a 4-3 non-conference win.

The Lords (8-9) decided pregame to get as many pitchers on the mound as possible. The first five of those pitchers—Brad Clegg, Tyler Roldan, Riley Munson, Ross Scheinberg and Will Allen—held the Muskies hitless over five innings of work. As a group, they walked three, struck out three, forced six ground outs and six fly outs.

Meanwhile, Kenyon bats posted the team's first two runs in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Matt Contreras started things off with a single and a stolen base. Senior Jono Chafe then ripped a triple that scored Contreras. Kenyon's next batter, junior Mikey Arman, grounded out to first, which allowed Chafe to score and gave the Lords a 2-0 edge.

Another two-run inning unfolded for Kenyon in the top of the fifth inning. Contreras led things off again, this time with a double. Matt von Roemer walked and both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Chafe. Arman then grounded out to shortstop, but Contreras scored and von Roemer moved to third. A passed ball to the next batter, Phillip Nam, allowed von Roemer to score, increasing the Lords' lead to 4-0.

Trouble then came knocking for the Lords, but not until the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman pitcher Kai Long took over on the mound and struggled with control. He walked two, hit a batter and gave up one single. Classmate Will Oakley replaced Long, but Muskingum (7-9) used a sacrifice and another single to finish off a three-run frame.

That hiccup was overcome with more solid pitching, as Connor Farrell and Luke Calcei took over in the seventh and eighth innings, respectively. Farrell fanned two in his one inning of work. Calcei gave up a two-out double, but quickly worked out of that trouble. Regular starter Jesse Bogacz then closed things out in the ninth. He struck out two to pick up his first save of the season and of his collegiate career.

Back in the batter's box, Kenyon ended up with seven hits. Contreras was the only Lords player with a multi-hit effort. Hitting out of the No. 9 hole in the order, he went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Arman, hitting in the No. 3 spot, was 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Roldan, making his first appearance of the season, pitched the second inning, struck out one and earned the win for the Lords, who'll begin North Coast Athletic Conference play this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders at Allegheny College.
