MEADVILLE, Pa. – The Kenyon College Lords and Allegheny College Gators opened North Coast Athletic Conference play Sunday by splitting a doubleheader at the Robertson Complex. Allegheny scored six late runs in game one for an 8-5 win. Kenyon then turned the tables in game two and scored six runs in the ninth inning for an 8-5 victory.
The Lords (9-10, 1-1 NCAC East) trailed 5-2 heading into the final inning of game two. Sophomore
Jake Berry led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Classmate
Matt Contreras then doubled him home and moved to third on a
Matt von Roemer single. Allegheny (10-6, 1-1 NCAC East) called for Cy Perry to replace Patrick Orr on the mound, but
Cormac Jewell and
Mikey Arman both singled off Perry, tying the game at 5-5.
Nick DiBucci then replaced Perry, but the Lords kept hitting. Senior
Phillip Nam doubled to score Jewell. DiBucci was then replaced by Clay Coon, who walked
Gaige Howard and then uncorked a wild pitch that scored Arman. Junior
Alec Manning capped off the inning for Kenyon with a sacrifice fly that scored Nam.
In the bottom of the ninth, junior
Luke Calcei took the ball for Kenyon and put down the Gators in order to earn his fourth save of the season. Prior to Calcei taking the mound, Kenyon started the game with freshman
Will Allen, who went a little more than five innings and gave up five earned runs.
Will Oakley finished off the sixth and seventh innings.
Dylan Goodwin threw a scoreless eighth inning to get the win.
In game one, the teams were tied 2-2 after five innings of play. In the top of the sixth inning, Kenyon took its first lead after Nam led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Manning. In the previous inning, Manning tied things up with a two-run homer to centerfield.
In the top of the eighth inning, Arman walked and Nam smashed another two-run homer for the Lords. That gave Kenyon a 5-2 lead, while needing just six more outs to preserve the win.
Starting pitcher
Jesse Bogacz pitched well through seven innings, but in the bottom of the eighth he ran out of gas and the Gators took full advantage. An Allegheny single, double and a two-out walk loaded up the bases. Dan Bonnett then singled to score two runs, bringing Bogacz's day to a close.
Connor Farrell came on in relief and didn't have much luck either. He gave up a walk, a three-run double to pinch-hitter Chase Davis and then a run-scoring single to Andrew Dawson. In a flash, Kenyon' three-run lead turned into a three-run deficit.
Perry closed things out for Allegheny in the ninth. Prior to his appearance, reliever Sean Kealy earned the win after he went three innings and gave up two earned runs. Starter Corey Keenan went five innings and got a no-decision after yielding three earned runs on six hits and a pair of walks.
For Kenyon, Bogacz took the loss after seven-and-two-thirds. He allowed six earned runs on seven hits and three walks. He also struck out three.
At the plate, Contreras, Arman and Nam all had four hits for Kenyon on the doubleheader.
The same two teams get together Monday at 10 a.m. to make up Saturday's postponed doubleheader.
Mikey Arman was a combined 4-for-8 in Saturday's doubleheader split with Allegheny.
He launched a home run and also tallied three runs scored and four RBI.
