Ladies end skid, take two from Yeowomen

OBERLIN, Ohio – The Kenyon College softball team snapped a seven-game skid Saturday by sweeping a doubleheader from the host Yeowomen of Oberlin College. The Ladies rallied for a 6-5 win in game one of the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) twin bill and then scored all their runs in one inning during an 8-5 game-two victory.

The back-to-back wins put Kenyon's season record at 10-14 overall and 2-0 in NCAC play. The losses sent Oberlin to 7-13 overall and 0-2 in conference contests.

The bulk of the Kenyon offense came from freshmen and sophomores. Sophomore and No. 3 hitter Britny Patterson went 4-for-8 with two runs scored and two RBI throughout the two games. Allison Stratman, a freshman, was 3-for-7 with three runs and three RBI, while her classmate, Lauren Graf, went 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI.

In game one, both Kenyon and Oberlin scored three runs in the first inning. The Yeowomen added two more in the second inning and moved out to an early 5-3 lead. Kenyon, however, answered in the top of the third inning with two runs of its own. Grace Pilz reached on an error and Stratman later doubled her home. Graf, the next Kenyon batter, then singled home Stratman to tie up the game.

Things remained square at 5-5 until the top of the seventh inning. That's when Patterson led things off with a solo homer to left field. The long ball, her fifth of the season, held up as the game-winner.

After giving up five runs in the first two innings, Kenyon starting pitcher Austen Whibley shut down Oberlin the rest of the way. She ended up working all seven innings to get the win. She allowed 11 hits and two walks, but also struck out five.

Game two was a different story. Kenyon scored all eight of its runs in the second inning and never trailed. The Ladies sent 12 batters to the plate in that second frame and they combined to post five singles, a walk and three doubles. Run-scoring hits came from Graf, Keely Sweet, Amanda Coyle, Patterson, Stratman and Pilz.

Whibley also got the pitching start in game two, but was lifted in the third inning after Oberlin scored three times. Sweet, another freshman, came on and finished off the game to earn the win. She went five innings, allowed two unearned runs on six hits and struck out one Oberlin batter.

Kenyon now owns a combined 8-2 record against Oberlin over the last five seasons. The Ladies will get right back to work tomorrow with a non-conference doubleheader at Capital University. Game one is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
