MEADVILLE, Pa. – Allegheny College starting pitchers Jarod Deagan and Nate Pastorek combined to throw 16 innings across Monday's make-up doubleheader with the visiting Kenyon College Lords. The duo allowed just one run on 12 hits while striking out 11 and steering the host Gators to wins of 9-1 and 4-2.
The victories gave Allegheny a 3-1 advantage in the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) divisional series with Kenyon. The Gators are now 12-6 overall and 3-1 in the NCAC East. Kenyon slipped to 9-12 overall and 1-3 in the NCAC East.
Deagan took the ball in game one for Allegheny. He ended up working all nine innings. He struck out seven and gave up one earned run on seven hits and no walks.
Kenyon's lone run in that first game was scored in the top of the third inning. Designated hitter
Cormac Jewell got things going with a single and junior right fielder
Mikey Arman, who hit .438 during the four-game series, doubled him home. Arman, hitting out of the No. 3 hole, was one of two Kenyon batters to register two hits off of Deagan. The other was
Patrick O'Leary, a freshman hitting seventh in the Lords' batting order.
Allegheny did most of its damage one inning prior. In the bottom of the second, the Gators knocked around Kenyon starter
Ross Scheinberg for six singles and five runs. They tacked on an unearned run in the third and then scored single runs in the fourth, sixth and eighth innings.
Scheinberg was pulled after five innings of work that included six earned runs, nine hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
Allegheny shortstop Austin Bristol ended up going 3-for-3 and scored four times in game one. Second baseman Jacob Shick and catcher Patrick Orr both had two hits and combined for three RBI.
In game two, the Kenyon runs came late. Pastorek held the Lords scoreless through seven innings before giving way to reliever Chase Boyer. In the eighth against Boyer, sophomore third baseman
Matt Contreras singled through the left side. He moved to second on a balk, advanced to third on a fly ball and then scored on an RBI ground out from O'Leary.
At that point, Kenyon trailed just 2-1. O'Leary started the game for the Lords and held Allegheny to two runs, one earned, in his first seven innings on the mound. In the bottom of the eighth, however, the Gators coaxed a walk from O'Leary and then Robert DiMaggio smashed a two-run home run to give Allegheny a 4-1 cushion heading into the final inning.
Boyer came back out for the Gators and got the first two Kenyon batters out in the top of the ninth. Junior first baseman
Alec Manning then laced a solo shot to right field to put a lid on all scoring. It was his second homer is as many days.
Contreras ended up going 3-for-6 with a run scored in the doubleheader. He also hit. 500 for the series, going 7-for-14 with two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI. Arman was 3-for-8 Monday, while O'Leary, Manning and
Gaige Howard each had two hits in the doubleheader.
The Lords will return to action Saturday for their home-opening doubleheader against the Hiram College Terriers. Game one is slated for a 1 p.m. start.
Sophomore Matt Contreras was 3-for-6 in Monday's make-up doubleheader at Allegheny College.
