Allegheny edges Kenyon in NCAC twin bill

MEADVILLE, Pa. – Allegheny College earned a pair of 1-0 victories over the Kenyon Ladies softball team on Tuesday in a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Robertson Complex. The losses moved Kenyon's record to 13-25 and 5-9 within the NCAC and eliminated the team from conference postseason contention.

GAME ONE

Allegheny pitcher Kala Mahen tossed a no-hitter as the Gators earned a 1-0 victory in the opener. It was just the third time since 2003 that Kenyon was held without a hit and the first since April 12, 2005 against Ohio Wesleyan University.

Over the course of the game, Mahen induced 10 groundouts, four line drives, a couple pop-outs, struck out four Kenyon batters and watched as no ball ever got into the outfield.

From the fourth through the seventh innings, the Ladies found those four line drives from Grace Pilz, Nicole Horita, Amanda Ogata and Lauren Graf but all were snagged by Allegheny's infield. The last connection – from Graf – resulted in a double play turned at first base in the seventh. Mahen then secured the no-no with a strikeout.

The lone scoring of the game came by error. With two out in the sixth, Allegheny's Megan Hazlett and Jessica Valerino had back-to-back singles to get the Gators on base.  In the next at-bat, Jessica Gordon reached on an error by the Ladies' third baseman allowing Hazlett to score.

Austen Whibley took the tough-luck loss as she tossed the whole game, fanned three and induced a combined 15 groundouts and fly outs.

GAME TWO

Missed opportunities from the middle of the game until the end cost the Ladies a victory as Allegheny got a two-out, walk-off single from Gordon in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Gators to another 1-0 win.

Through the first three innings, neither team could do much as there was just a total of four base runners. Things changed though in the fourth.

With Kenyon batting, Britny Patterson and Pilz reached base to start the inning. The Ladies didn't convert though as Allegheny turned a pair of grounders into outs before pitcher Miranda Arison recorded a strikeout.

Two innings later, the Ladies loaded the bases but a ground ball into the shortstop area induced a force out at third ending that opportunity.

Finally in the seventh, Madi Maldonado and Patterson were on first and second, but a chopper to the circle from Pilz resulted in a ground-ball out by Arison.

The Gators then closed the game with Gordon's single up the middle plating Hazlett.

Next up for Kenyon is a home doubleheader on Saturday against DePauw. The Ladies will be looking for their first home win against the Tigers since 2013.
