Lords take two from Terriers

GAMBIER, Ohio – A seventh-inning, three-run home run from senior Phillip Nam completed a Kenyon College rally and provided a spark the Lords needed to sweep Saturday's home-opening doubleheader with the Hiram College Terriers. Nam's game-one blast gave Kenyon an 8-6 win and paved the way for a 12-0 game-two victory.

Trailing 6-2 in the first game, Kenyon finally got its offense going with a five-run seventh inning. Two-out, run-scoring singles from freshman Patrick O'Leary and junior Mikey Arman pulled the Lords within three runs of the Terriers. Nam then came to the plate a ripped a homer to left. It was his third home run of the season and it put the Lords ahead 7-6.

Triples from sophomore Matt Contreras and junior Matt von Roemer added one insurance run for Kenyon in the eighth inning and finalized all the scoring at 8-6.

Nam finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored and four RBI. Max Warren, Eric DelRosso, Arman and von Roemer all contributed two hits apiece. Arman scored twice, as did Contreras.

On the mound O'Leary got the start, but didn't make it out of the fifth inning. He gave up five runs, three of which were earned, on six hits and five walks. He also struck out five. Will Oakley and Brad Clegg took on relief duty with Clegg picking up the win. Jesse Bogacz then polished off the last two innings with a trio of strikeouts to earn his second save of the season.

Kenyon freshman right-hander Will Allen got the start in game two and pitched well. He went seven shutout innings, struck out one and yielded just four hits and two walks. He got plenty of support from the Kenyon offense and only needed to pitch seven innings because of the new conference rule that ends a game when there is ten-run margin after 6 2/3 innings.

Things were quiet for the first four innings of game two, but in the fifth frame the Lords erupted for eight runs. Twelve batters went to the plate and recorded three doubles and six singles. At one point, the Lords rattled off seven consecutive hits. The doubles were struck by Nam, Jackson Celestin and Arman. Arman's two-bagger plated two Kenyon runs and later in the inning a single from Alec Manning also scored two. The other RBI hits came from Celestin, Contreras, von Roemer and O'Leary.

In the next inning, the Lords refused to let up. O'Leary hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly and Arman followed up with a three-run bomb to left field. That was Arman's third home run of the season and it put the 10-run rule into play.

Arman finish the game 2-for-4 with five RBI and two runs scored. Warren went 3-for-3 with a run scored. O'Leary had two hits and two RBI, while von Roemer had two hits and two runs scored.

Overall, Kenyon hit .424 as a team during the two games. Six different players had three hits or more and Warren, a junior catcher batting out of the No. 8 spot in the lineup, led the way with a combined 5-for-6 day at the plate.

The two wins bumped Kenyon's overall record to 11-12 and its North Coast Athletic Conference East Division record to an even 3-3. Hiram slipped to 10-9 overall and 0-2 in the NCAC East.

The same two teams will meet at McCloskey Field again on Sunday for another doubleheader that gets underway at noon.
