Nam’s walk-off slam secures series sweep

GAMBIER, Ohio – Kenyon College batters relentlessly punished Hiram College pitching throughout a four-game weekend series. The final blow came Sunday, when senior Phillip Nam cranked a walk-off grand slam to give the host Lords a 10-9 win in the series finale. Prior to that, Kenyon claimed a 16-9 victory in a game-one slugfest.

Kenyon's combined total of 26 runs in Sunday's two games was generated from 32 hits, 17 walks and one hit batter. On the hit list were ten doubles and two home runs. With Saturday's two wins added to the mix, the Lords hit .400 as a team in the series. They racked up a four-game total of 60 hits, including 15 doubles, two triples and four home runs. They also drew 21 walks and stole four bases.

The most impactful hit of those 60 was the last one. In the bottom of the ninth inning of game two, the Lords trailed 9-5. Hiram closer Tyler Carcioppolo was on the mound and he started off the final frame by hitting Paul Siciliano with a pitch and walking Gaige Howard. Siciliano moved to third on wild pitch and then scored when Matt von Roemer came through with an infield single.

Both Howard and von Roemer moved up a bag on another wild pitch and then Patrick O'Leary walked to load the bases with Hiram ahead 9-6. Mikey Arman came to the plate, but struck out swinging for the first out of the inning. Nam then stepped in and drilled Carcioppolo's first offering to straightaway center, clearing the wall and sending the Kenyon dugout into a frenzy.

The home run was the second of the series and the team-leading fourth of the season for Nam. He was 4-for-9 with two runs scored and six RBI on the day. For the series, he was 7-for-16 with four runs scored and 10 RBI.

In addition to Nam's strong showing, von Roemer went 5-for-6 with a run scored and three RBI during the game-two victory. Howard, who batted leadoff, walked three times, singled and scored three times.

After giving up five runs to the Terriers in the first inning, Kenyon played catch-up for the whole game. The Lords used six different pitchers with Luke Calcei and Eric DelRosso being the most effective. Calcei came on the in the sixth and tossed three innings of one-run ball. DelRosso took over in the ninth and allowed only a walk to earn the win.

Back in game one, the Lords offense set the tone early by ringing up six runs in the first inning. The first six Kenyon batters all came around to score after they collectively recorded three singles, two doubles and a walk. Both O'Leary and Alec Manning had two-run doubles in the outburst.

Hiram (10-11, 0-4 NCAC East) got as close as 11-9 after putting together four-run fifth inning, but Kenyon answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Those runs were scored on two Hiram wild pitches and a passed ball.

Kenyon (13-12, 5-3 NCAC East) tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning to finish off its scoring spree. The first of those two runs came on a von Roemer home run. He was 3-for-6 with three runs scored and an RBI in game one. In the doubleheader, he was 8-for-12 with four runs scored and four RBI. In the four-game series, he was 12-for-19 with seven runs scored and six RBI. He also drew two walks and stole a base. His season batting average is now up to .459 (50-for-109).

Game one also saw O'Leary go 4-for-5 with three runs scored and five RBI. Arman was 4-for-6. He scored twice and had two RBI. Additionally, Matt Contreras was 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI.

On the mound, Brad Clegg pitched two innings of relief and was credited with the win. Will Oakley worked the final four innings and earned the save. He struck out three and allowed just three hits.
