SPRINGFIELD, Ohio - The Kenyon College men's lacrosse team had no answer for a relentless Wittenberg University offense on Saturday. The Lords fell 13-7 to the host Tigers, a loss sealed by a mid-game run of nine straight scores.
The Tigers (6-5, 3-2 NCAC) drew first blood when senior David Strahm scored two early goals off consecutive Kenyon turnovers, one of them caused by Strahm. The Lords soon rallied back and took a 3-2 lead with goals from juniors
Josh Galardi,
Pierce Kraft and
Jonah Florence.
As the teams were still trying to make proper adjustments, neither team scored again until just over a minute remained in the quarter. That's when Wittenberg's Charlie Tillett tied the game at three apiece.
That goal started what was to be the turning point of the game. Over the next two quarters of play, the Wittenberg's offense continued to find the back of the net while its defense held Kenyon scoreless. The Tigers bagged eight goals, three in the second and five in the third, to put the Lords in an 11-3 hole.
Wittenberg built its lead by blitzing the Kenyon defense and keeping the ball in the Lords' half of the field. By the end of the third, Wittenberg had launched 52 shots to Kenyon's 18. Overall, the Tigers wound up with 60 shots, compared to Kenyon's 34.
The Lords broke the Tigers' run six minutes into the fourth quarter, as senior
Robert Jacobs assisted both
Daniel Maffezzoli and
Shay Walczak on back-to-back goals, which were the Lords' first points in over 40 minutes of play. Kenyon secured two more goals in the fourth, but the Tigers matched with two of their own to solidify their 13-7 victory.
For Wittenberg, Strahm led all scorers with three goals on just four shots, while Michael Coyle notched two goals and two assists.
On Kenyon's side, Jacobs recorded two assists and a goal. Kraft scooped up four ground balls and caused one turnover to complement his first-quarter goal.
Kenyon (4-6, 2-3 NCAC) will look to end its current two-game skid against its next opponent, Oberlin College. That conference contest will take place on April 12 at 7 p.m. at Oberlin.
Robert Jacobs scored one goal and assisted on two others Saturday, but the Lords
allowed a nine-goal run to Wittenberg University and wound up absorbing a 13-7 loss.
