GAMBIER, Ohio – Christopher Newport University's Rachael Allshouse rocketed a loose ball back into the Kenyon College cage and helped the Captains earn a 2-1 win on Sunday at McBride Field. The victory moved CNU to 4-0 while Kenyon dropped its first game and fell to 4-1.
With a little over three minutes left, Ladies keeper
Sarah Speroff kicked away an opportunity from CNU's Rachel Cooke. The cleared ball then came to Allshouse who finished from the left side for the go-ahead score.
Kenyon got the first goal of the game just twelve minutes in from senior
Weezie Foster. Stephanie McKinney saved a shot from Ladies freshman
Gigi Guenther but Foster was able to put it back in for a 1-0 home-team lead.
A couple minutes later, Christopher Newport's Jackie Kotoriy had an on-goal look but Speroff stopped it. Kenyon's keeper had seven saves on the day.
The remainder of the first half saw
Katelyn Hutchinson and
Kelsey Trulik find a pair of shots but neither rang true.
CNU picked up the energy early in the second half and found the equalizer just 2:42 into the second stanza. The Captains had a pair of penalty corners and took four shots before Courtnie Greene tied things up off a blocked shot.
Offensively, the Ladies had a little more trouble finding good looks in the second. Hutchinson had a goal disallowed with less than 20 minutes left while
Shannon Hart got Kenyon's other on-goal attempt in the 44th minute.
Next up for the Ladies is a trip to conference foe DePauw University on September 16 at 12 p.m.
