GREENCASTLE, Ind. – In a clash of North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) heavyweights, the Kenyon College field hockey team scored late goals in both halves of Saturday's game and registered a 4-3 win over host and defending conference champion DePauw University.
Prior to the start of the game, Kenyon and DePauw met 11 times over the last four seasons with DePauw holding a slim 6-5 advantage. Three of those 11 meetings were in the NCAC tournament championship game. DePauw won the NCAC regular-season championship a year ago, but Kenyon took the NCAC tournament title.
Saturday's game added yet another thrilling chapter to the strong rivalry.
After falling behind 1-0 in the first ten minutes, Kenyon (5-1, 2-0 NCAC) finally got on the board as time expired in the first half. A penalty corner, awarded with no time left on the clock, was carried out by freshman
Molly Keen. Her inbound pass made it to senior
Shannon Hart, who managed to find a way to beat DePauw goalkeeper Sarah Foye.
The momentum from that final first-half goal carried over as Kenyon tacked on two more scores within the first 17 minutes of the second stanza. Less than three minutes into resumed play, the Ladies took advantage of another penalty corner. This time
Kelsey Trulik scored off an assist from
Hannah Paterakis. About 14 minutes later, Hart found the back of the cage again, giving Kenyon a 3-1 cushion.
At that point, DePauw (2-3, 1-1 NCAC) called a timeout and subbed in Corina Bourantas. Following the brief break, the Tigers blitzed Kenyon with seven shots over the next 14 minutes of play. Both the fourth and seventh shots in that series ended up crossing the Keyon goal line. In the game's 55th minute, Paige Berliner scored off an assist from Bourantas. Then, in the 66th minute, Berliner assisted Reilly Bruce on the game-tying goal.
After taking DePauw's best punches, the Ladies fired back. Following yet another penalty corner, this one with just 1:05 showing on the clock, senior
Weezie Foster collected a pass from Keen and fired in the game-winner. It was Foster's third goal of the season and Keen's third assist of the season.
As the final score indicated, the game was extremely close. Both teams took 14 shots, while DePauw edged Kenyon in penalty corners, 11-9. Foye ended up with four saves for the Tigers and senior
Sarah Speroff made five saves for the Ladies.
Senior Weezie Foster scored with 1:05 left on the clock to lift the Kenyon Ladies
to a thrilling 4-3 road win over the DePauw University Tigers.
