MARIETTA, Ohio – Despite holding a 25-5 shots advantage, the No. 15 ranked Kenyon College men's soccer team played Marietta College to a 0-0 tie after 110 minutes of play on Wednesday afternoon at Marietta Field.
Kenyon moved its record to 4-1-1 while the Pioneers – who have not surrendered a goal this season – moved to 4-0-1.
The Lords had plenty of extremely good looks, but Pioneers keeper Tyler Sholl turned up his play in the goalie's box and tied his career high with 11 saves. Three of those came in the overtime periods with Kenyon right on the doorstep of victory.
Within the first minute of play,
Woo Jeon got the Lords going with an on-goal attempt. Fifteen minutes later,
Brice Koval's header hit the crossbar and just a couple minutes after that
Bret Lowry's header attempt hit the crossbar again.
Two more shots found their way to Sholl the remainder of the half while the Lords' defense didn't allow practically anything to the Pioneers. The home team's only shot came in the 12th minute but freshman
Ian McInturf denied Tom Sloan's attempt.
In the second half, Kenyon took nine attempts to Marietta's three but the score remained 0-0. The Lords found five on-goal looks but Sholl saved four of them while another was a team save.
The first overtime brought near victory for Kenyon.
John Penas had a shot in the box along the right side and Koval added three more but Sholl denied all three. In the second extra session, senior
Henry Myers delivered the team's last on-goal look but once again, Sholl was there.
McInturf earned his third career clean sheet while collecting two saves.
Kenyon will now return home for six straight matches starting on September 16 at 5 p.m. when Thomas More College comes to Mavec Field.
Junior Brice Koval fired three shots in the first overtime against Marietta on Wednesday but the Pioneers
came up with some big saves to leave the contest in a 0-0 draw by match's end.
