GAMBIER, Ohio – Thomas More College trailed 1-0 for the final 22 minutes of the first half and 43 minutes of the second half before Bryce Day found the equalizer against Kenyon College on Saturday at Mavec Field. That 1-1 score remained for the remainder of the contest that brought two overtime sessions.
For the second straight game, the Lords' offense generated plenty of chances as they out-shot the Saints 26-12. Kenyon also controlled possession quite well.
The Lords capitalized on one of those chances in the first half. At the 22:29 mark, junior
Greg McNeer was along the far sideline and his kick came to the right post.
Woo Jeon skied for the ball and beat TMC keeper Jeff Paulin with a header to the right corner.
Kenyon nearly struck again with 1:03 left in the half.
Bret Lowry's header was hard hit, but Paulin dove along the right post and saved what would have been Kenyon's second goal.
Thomas More's best chance in the first half came on a 2-on-1 break with Suli Kayed on the run up the middle. He was thwarted though by midfielder
Oliver Wynn.
In the second half, Kenyon had more opportunities to move its lead further.
Collyn Carpenter fired a loose deflection back towards Thomas More's net with 21 minutes remaining but keeper Andrew Mathews jumped and knocked it over the top crossbar.
Henry Myers added a header attempt at 83:10 but Mathews was able to stop it right post. Just a little over four minutes left, the Saints tied it up. After a hard cross from inside the box by Adam Mathews, Day picked up the wall left post and fired back in to tie things up.
Brice Koval added the final shot of regulation, but his header went just over the top crossbar.
The first overtime saw Lords freshman
Ian McInturf come up with his fifth save on an attempt from Kayed. McNeer and Jeon added shots as well but both attempts went wide. Then in the second extra session,
John Penas had an on-goal look but Mathews made his seventh and final save of the night.
Next up on the schedule for Kenyon is another home date on September 21 when they host Heidelberg University at 5:15 p.m.
Senior Woo Jeon tallied Kenyon's lone goal on Saturday as the Lords tied Thomas More College
1-1 at Mavec Field. Kenyon will next face Heidelberg on September 21 at home.
