Ladies split two at Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Saturday, the second and final day of the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic, saw the Kenyon College volleyball team split a pair of 3-0 matches. The Ladies began the day with a 25-12, 25-16, 25-19 victory over Gallaudet University and then ended the day with a 25-11, 25-21, 25-19 loss to the host Bullets.

The split put the Ladies' season record at 3-1. Gallaudet slid to 1-2 with its loss to Kenyon and Gettysburg improved to 4-0 win its win.

Against Gallaudet, the Ladies put together a couple of sustained rallies to take the first two sets.

In the first set, holding a 12-9 lead, the Ladies used kills from juniors Delaney Swanson and Schuyler Stupica, as well as a couple of Gallaudet attack errors, to move ahead 16-9. The Bison notched three of the next four points, but that was all they would get. Senior Ashley Martens served up the final seven points, including three aces, for the Ladies.

In the second set, Gallaudet raced out to leads of 9-3 and 10-5. Two more kills from Swanson and four more Bison attack errors helped the Ladies tie things up at 10-10 and then 12-12. From there, freshman Carly Uhlir took over the serve and didn't give it up until the Ladies owned a 19-12 lead. That Kenyon run was fueled by two Uhlir aces and two kills from sophomore Mackenzie Bruzzio.

The final set was a bit tighter, but the Ladies extended a 19-17 lead to a 23-17 advantage with two kills apiece from Swanson and Stupica.

For the match, Swanson pounded down 13 kills and Stupica chalked up eight without an error. Bruzzio also had eight kills and senior setter Jensen Shurbert racked up 32 assists. Stupica also tacked on seven block assists, while fellow junior Alexi Donnelly contributed five kills and a team-high 11 digs.

Against Gettysburg, the Ladies got down by six points early in the first set, but managed to cut that deficit down to two points, at 10-8 and then again at 12-10. That momentum came to a screeching halt when Gettysburg closed out the set on a 13-1 run.

The Ladies made the next two sets a little closer, however, the majority of their time was spent chasing the Bullets. In those final two sets, the Kenyon women only held a lead after the first three points of the second set.

Swanson didn't have the same success as she did in the first match and neither did Stupica. Gettysburg held that Kenyon pair to eight kills. Bruzzio did a good job of picking up the slack, as she recorded a team-high 13 kills without an error. Shurbert added another 27 assists to her stat sheet and senior libero Rachael Thorson rang up a team-high 18 digs.

At the end of the Classic, Bruzzio was selected to the All-Tournament Team. She had a combined 43 kills, 17 digs and 12 blocks throughout the four-match weekend.

The Ladies will now prep for next weekend's Kenyon Invitational, a two-day, six team event that starts Friday at 6 p.m.
