GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Kenyon College volleyball team kicked off its 2017 schedule with a couple of victories Friday, the first day of the two-day, 11-team Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic. The Ladies rattled off a convincing 3-0 win over Marywood University (25-15, 25-12, 25-23) and followed it up with a tight 3-1 victory against McDaniel College (25-21, 23-25, 26-24, 25-13).
Those results gave the Ladies a 2-0 start to the season for the second time in the past two seasons. They'll look double-up that win total tomorrow with matches against Gallaudet University at noon and then against host Gettysburg at 2 p.m.
In the opener against Marywood, sophomore
Mackenzie Bruzzio posted a .400 hitting percentage with 10 kills and two errors in 20 attempts. Juniors
Delaney Swanson and
Alexi Donnelly added eight and seven kills, respectively. Donnelly also contributed a team-high 13 digs, while senior
Jensen Shurbert total 21 assists. Freshman
Carly Uhlir smacked three service aces and sophomore
Maleah Miller racked up four block assists for the Ladies.
In the four-set win over McDaniel, Bruzzio tacked on another 12 kills, giving her 22 on the day. Junior
Schuyler Stupica had a huge match, tallying 11 kills with no errors, three solo blocks and four assisted blocks. Not to be outdone, senior
Rachael Thorson amassed 36 digs, a total that tied for the third-best, single-match output in program history.
Big numbers against McDaniel were also turned in by Shurbert, who had 37 assists and 18 digs. Helping her earn those assists were Swanson and Donnelly, who again threw down eight and seven kills, respectively. Swanson also kicked in four service aces and 13 digs.
As a team, Kenyon averaged 11.4 kills, 10.8 assists, 2.0 aces and 21.14 digs per set throughout Friday's two matches.
The Ladies have their work cut out for them Saturday, but if they find a way to win both of their matches it will mark the program's first 4-0 start since the 1988 season.
Sophomore Mackenzie Bruzzio threw down 22 kills Friday and led the Ladies to wins
over Marywood and McDaniel in the opening day of the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic.
