SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – A close first half turned into a blowout for the Kenyon College field hockey team as they out-scored Wittenberg University 4-1 in the second en route to a 5-1 North Coast Athletic Conference win on Sunday. The victory kept the Ladies in first place in the conference and bolstered their record to 8-1 and 5-0 in the NCAC.
Getting on the scoreboard took a little bit of time for Kenyon in the first half. Two shots went wide while Tigers keeper Allie Purvis saved two others. The scoreless tie was then broke at the 27:33 mark. Newcomer
Tara Shetty found
Lynne Cullen along the right side and Cullen did the rest for her second goal of the season.
Kenyon out-shot Witt 7-2 in the first half.
That 1-0 score remained until the 50:19 mark of the second half. After
Shannon Hart's shot was blocked, fellow senior
Katelyn Hutchinson put the rebound in from the left side.
A little over three minutes later, Hutchinson scored again as she raced along the left side and beat Purvis for her fifth goal of the year.
With a 3-0 lead, the Ladies added two more goals. First-year
Gigi Guenther slapped a back-handed shot right in front of the cage and with less than six minutes left, Shetty scored her first career goal.
Wittenberg never really threatened in the contest with its only goal coming to Blaine Donnelly at 66:05. The Ladies' usually-superb defense was cooking throughout the affair and they yielded just four shots to the Tigers. Senior
Sarah Speroff collected two saves in the process.
Next up for Kenyon is a home date with The College of Wooster (6-3, 3-2 NCAC) on September 27 at 4:30 p.m.
