Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Wynn, McInturf fuel Kenyon win over Case

GAMBIER, Ohio – Redemption was on the mind of the Kenyon College men's soccer team Tuesday evening, as it blanked the Case Western Reserve University Spartans, one of just two teams to defeat the Lords during the 2016 regular season.

Winners this season by a 1-0 count at Mavec Field, the Lords now have shut out their opponents in back-to-back matches and have not allowed a goal in five of their 10 games this season.

Kenyon freshman goalkeeper Ian McInturf stepped up in the game's most pivotal moment, a penalty kicked awarded to the Spartans in the 74th minute. Paul Darmstadter attempted to knot up the score, but was turned back on a diving save from McInturf. The shot was low and to the right of McInturf, who dove to knock it down before diving on top of the ball and ending the sequence.

Senior Oliver Wynn was able to put the Lords on the board early due to some help from teammate Henry Myers. Myers and Wynn effectively worked the ball toward the right side of the box, where the last pass from Myers set up Wynn for a left-footed shot that went into the bottom right portion of the goal.

The first half saw high-quality chances on each side, in addition to the Wynn goal. Case's Zachary Senft was able to sneak past the Kenyon back line and was left one-on-one with McInturf as the ball came to the front of the box. McInturf vacated the net and Senft booted one that soared wide.

Kenyon, alternatively, almost had a penalty shot of its own in the first half. Freshman Gabe Ivins was tackled just a yard outside of the box, but the resulting free kick from junior David Kim was saved by Case's keeper Calvin Boyle.

Both teams had numerous opportunities to find the back of the net in the second half, as the game played on with higher pace and more level possession time. Both defenses weathered the storm, however, and Wynn's goal held up for the Kenyon victory.

Statistically, Kenyon outshot Case 24-8 and continued a trend of outshooting all but one of their opponents this season. McInturf made two saves in the victory, while Boyle was able to keep the Spartans (4-4-1) in the game with six saves.

Kenyon (6-2-2) will resume conference play on Saturday, when the Lords host Denison University at 3:30 p.m.
