GAMBIER, Ohio – Senior
Henry Myers and junior
Brice Koval accounted for all the Kenyon College goals Saturday as the Lords soccer team rolled to a 3-1 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over rival Denison University. It was the Lords' fifth straight win, dating back to the 2013 season, over the Big Red.
Kenyon outshot Denison 18-4, including a 7-1 margin in the first half. One of those first-half shots was a penalty-kick goal from Koval, following a Denison foul in the box during the game's 19th minute. The goal was Koval's third of the season and the 12th of his Kenyon career.
A little more than eight minutes later, Koval found himself near the Big Red goal again. This time he sent in a crossing pass that was met by Myers, who tapped it past goalkeeper Dylan Brown and into the Denison net.
That 2-0 Kenyon lead carried through halftime and about 15 minutes into the second half. With 29:30 left in the game, the Lords tacked on an insurance goal. Junior
Bret Lowry set up the play by heading the ball across the box to Myers. Myers then headed it over the goal line for his team-leading ninth goal of the season and the 23rd of his collegiate career.
Denison avoided the shutout by catching the Lords a bit off guard in the game's 74th minute. A long free kick, hit by Jasdeep Khairia from just inside the mid-field stripe, sailed over everyone's head and skipped into the Lords' net. As it turned out, that was the only one of Denison's four shots that was on goal.
The Lords' win, their third in a row, improved their overall record to 7-2-2 and their NCAC mark to 2-0-0. The loss dropped Denison to 4-6-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the conference.
Kenyon will next be in action Saturday, October 7. The Lords will host the Wabash College Little Giants (7-2-0, 1-0-0 NCAC) in another important NCAC match.
Junior Brice Koval racked up a goal and an assist during Kenyon's 3-1 victory over rival Denison.
